Chip,
A Rambling Rebel gets the hound credit. Blackhawk goes back to setter ....allegedly.
We Pointer guys don't get our panties in a wad like the GSP crowd. We just want better bird dogs. If a coon hound made Rebel the dog he was and a setter made Blackhawk the producer he is ...well, I just don't care!!
Ch. Strut pup ...I'll take the results.

Oh I knew exactly what you were talking about Ross, I grew up hunting with my uncle a lot and he had alot of Rebel bred dogs, and the coonhound comments followed us everywhere, it did not help matters that we had half the kennel full of Black and Tans and Redbones .
I sure loved those dogs and the days I had with em. The first dog I bought was a Redbone named Big Jake, "bleep" near lost him to a coon drowning him, he was a young pup and so was I. Sure was a helluva lot of fun.

If I wasn't breeding a bitch on Monday to Chase Hill Little Bud, I would give you a call. Maybe I will get to see one of your pups running in the woods.Yawallac wrote:Grouse Dog Guy,
That pup in the picture is on his way to MI. Will be running in the Cover Dog trials this fall. I have placed a bunch of Pointer pups in the grouse woods in the last year. Pretty cool! (I grew up in the grouse woods of NE PA!!)
Dale Herndon from MI bought this pup, Rocky. He is sending him to a Pro but I don't know who yet. Dale will be running another pup he bought from me last spring, a female out of Attitude's High Finance x Magic Spice Girl (Add' Go Boy daughter). Her name is Molly and she is a super little prospect.
Good luck with your breeding!!

That the best darn statement I've seen yet on this or any board in quite a while.. Although I own no Pointers, that there is one good lookin' bird dog!Yawallac wrote:Chip,

I am not getting this love fest over Blackhawk offspring. As stated by Yawallac, "The hottest sire in the country". Some of the best pointer lines , for all age dogs, have none of his lines in their kennels. He tends to throw decent shooting dogs. The only time I saw Strut run he did not impress me. It seemed to me he was should be running in Shooting dog instead of All Age. The only BlackHawk dog I really like is Harpeth Valley Hawk. But his bottom side is Miller.
I saw where Scott Turner, (he bought Attitudes high Finance), is selling 13 or 14 Blackhawk puppies right now. I believe he has bred them to another rock Acre dog. You can have as many as you like for $1000 a puppy. OUCH. It would add up fast looking for a trial dog at $1000 a pup. But if people out there are willing to pay $1000 for a puppy, with a 1 in 25 chance of developing into a winning trialer, then, I guess Yawallac is right.
I guess I need to get into this breeding thing.

Like I said. He did not impress me as an All Age campaigner. Not to say he was not a good dog, or would make a good shooting dog.Yawallac wrote:Since Strut won more as a Derby than any dog in American Field history I suspect that your opinion is in the minority! The only time I saw Strut run he did not impress me.
I know Strut did well as a Derby. He may have come earlier than most. As you know, the age of the dogs vary quite widely as derby campaigners.
Around here we judge a dog AFTER their Derby campaign, not before.

Tri-colored pointers go back a very long way, including in the descriptions of coloration of some of the original Spanish pointers.
Earlly modern pointer scion Commanche Frank, out of Fishel's Frank was tri-colored. Years later Herb Holmes kennel namesake Gunsmoke was tri-colored as well.
Here's some history of the tri-colored pointer going back to the early 1800's.

If some of you guys really want a TRUE prospect out of the Rock Acre line, instead of buying a long string of pups looking for a winning dog.( Odds are about 1 in 25 even with really good breeding)
Pee Wee Cole, (Breeder of the Rock Acre Line), told me he has a dog he won a national event as a puppy with. The dog will be beginning as a derby.
Pee Wee said he needs $20,000 for the dog. If it were me I would purchase that dog before I would spend $1000 after $1000 looking for a pup that would run. It seems to me it would be cheaper in the long run.
I guess if you want a pup that takes a pretty picture posed up, and looks good pointing a feather, it takes care of ONE of the seven, or so, attributes necessary to make a winning trial dog. But the other equally important traits are a crap shoot at that age.

Thatys what I need. A $20000 toy I can spend another 10000 on. Think I will stick with a puppy. I don't get much pleasure out of buying a winner. If I can't breed it or train it what is the purpose of having a dog.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

I feel the same way. I have seen owners that could not pick their dog out on a chaingang. Although I don't understand that mentality I am glad it exists. Those are the people that pay the bills to keep pros in business and keep the trials and many of the breeding programs going. In the end we all reap the benefits.ezzy333 wrote:Thatys what I need. I had a direct daughter of The Texas Squire that was tri-color. She never threw any tri-color pups.gunner wrote:Tri-colored pointers go back a very long way, including in the descriptions of coloration of some of the original Spanish pointers.

Holy Cow!!! And you don't even deal with a breed that is one color. LOL Imagine if you had a string of Weimaraners!!I have seen owners that could not pick their dog out on a chaingang. Although I don't understand that mentality I am glad it exists.
I do have two littermates here that I have to look at closely. They are almost identical! Eyeset is slightly different as is muzzle length. Other than that no one would be able to tell them apart. One does do better in the field than the other also.

Have any pictures of those pups now that they are grown?
Re: Tri-colored Pointer Pups!
Acooper, in the "Sarah's Boys" thread, the Strut pup is Rocky.

Re: Tri-colored Pointer Pups!
We haven't had any since we stopped breeding Rock Acre females to Rock Acre males.
Re: Tri-colored Pointer Pups!
Update, we bought a 2yo tri-colored female today and we will probably breed her to Jack, our Blackhawk son.

I think I've heard you don't like to breed Blackhawk to Blackhawk. If this is true, why? How much is too much in your opinion?

Re: Tri-colored Pointer Pups!
The Rock Acre line has traits that we want to exploit so it really depends on the individual dogs. We're going to try a couple of breedings that will double up on Blackhawk because we want to see how Jack, our Blackhawk son, produces going in that direction. So it just depends on what you are trying to do.I think I've heard you don't like to breed Blackhawk to Blackhawk. If this is true, why? How much is too much in your opinion?
Re: Tri-colored Pointer Pups!
That b/w/t tri has very settery head in the photo...and the ears appear to have a little bit of fluff on them. Prettier than the average pointer
Ross, do you think that the coloration and setter characteristics would be held against the dog in competition if its performance was on par with other top-level competitors? Would the novelty of the color give it an edge in either trials or as breeding stock (given good performance record of course)?

Re: Tri-colored Pointer Pups!
It certainly hasn't hurt Strut. He was the winningest Derby in AF history and is now AA DOY. And I don't believe he was given extra credit for tan cheeks.Ross, do you think that the coloration and setter characteristics would be held against the dog in competition if its performance was on par with other top-level competitors?
Re: Tri-colored Pointer Pups!
Here is the girl we picked up yesterday. She is by Strut, bred to an Elhew Fibber McGee daughter. We will breed her to Jack (avatar), our Blackhawk son. I worked her on birds yesterday and today and I like her.
