Where can pointing Labs compete in hunt tests?
I see that there are some hunt tests designed for flushing dog breeds and some for for pointing dog breeds through the AKC, HRC, NAVDA and others. What do you do when you have a dog that is known to be a flushing breed like a Lab, for example, or in my case an Airedale, that has been trained to point? Can a pointing Lab be entered in a pointing dog competition anywhere? I asked a NAVDA rep at the Pheasants Forever Pheasant Fest and he said they can't compete there. Is there a place for them?

Hunting is all about the dog. When we get some birds to bring home it's just icing on the cake.

Is the dog registered with the AKC?
If not, then you may be able to get an IRC number and compete in an AKC Hunt Test. I'd have to check the rules, though.

We have done something with nothing for so long we are now qualified to do everything with anything....

Not in AKC Pointing Breed Hunt Tests. See this page:bobspheasant wrote: Can a pointing Lab be entered in a pointing dog competition anywhere?

Note that I am not inferring any value judgement on this, just providing the information.

Thanks for the input. I really like the fact that my Airedale Bob points. For him it was a natural thing that I have encouraged. Since my buddies and I really like the way he hunts, I don't want to screw that up just to do a few hunt tests. However, I reall would like to show him off at tests because so few people have seen a good Airedale work.
