GSP pup sizes
I have a GSP that grew very quickly and one that grew slowly, and I am curious. In some breeds they have growth charts for various lines and all. What were some of your experiences with sizes in your older pups (say 4-6 ish months) ... and then how big did they get eventually?
My oldest female GSP katie was really small at 6 months but is 55 lbs and 23 1/2 inches now She took 2+ years to fully grow up in height.
My male was pretty much full height at 1 year, but filled in after that... He was nearly full height by 7 months, but added a little more after that and is quite tall

Larger dogs mature somewhere around 3 years.
Mid-sized around 2 years
Small dog may mature slightly past 1 year.
But there are differences within all breeds just like people. It doesn't mean a thing and there is no reason to be concerned since it is just normal growth.
I do think different breeds tend to mature mentally at different ages also.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

I am not concerned. Just interested in diferrent particular situations. I was hoping some of you all might have specific examples. Like my two. My female was 38 lbs at 6 months but matures to 55 ish. My male was 60 lbs at 6 months and matured to a little over 70. percentage wise that's a big growth difference between the two over time. But the male just shot up really quickly.ezzy333 wrote:

Then our GWP was about 55 at 6 months and is still only maybe 60 at 9 months.
Just find it interesting... wondering if anyone else has similar examples
My female GSP was 14 lbs the first time I took her to the vet for her shots (8 weeks?). One month later she was 28 lbs. Didn't really keep up with her much from then on, but she was 62 lbs this time last year and is now 68 lbs, about 27" at the withers and 29 months old. She's always been big....she was bigger than her brothers when I picked her up.

It's going to vary quite a bit. Generally you can take the height/weight of each of the parents and figure all the puppies will end up somewhere in between the two.
There are certainly exceptions however. With Rusty bred dogs if you tightly line breed you frequently see very large males and very small females in the same litter.
Generally they will have their about 90% of their height and length by the time they are around 18 months. Females usually finish out right around 2 years and males around 2.5-3 years. However the males (un neutered) will generally continue to fill out until they are between three and five years of age.
Different lines are going to mature differently so you have to keep that in mind as well. CR

There's a reason I like dogs better'n people
Wow. That's impressive. Is that her or can you post one? I'd love to see your girl bred to the daddy of my GSP. My boy is just four yo now and is still filling in. He weighed about 70 by the time he was 2 or 2 1/2. Bet he's pushing 85 now, fixed, and no fat. He's pretty tall though, 28, maybe 29.mtlee wrote:My female GSP was 14 lbs the first time I took her to the vet for her shots (8 weeks?). One month later she was 28 lbs. Big, very smart and a very hard working bird machine, excellent house dog too. He might be the best dog, ever.
PVA.org needs you to send them 3 bucks.
I have really yet to see a shorthair that is taller than her. Everyone I run into just assumes she is a male! I was at a trainer's early this summer and as soon as I walked up he goes thats a good looking dog you got there....then she squatted and peed...he looked at me in disbelief and goes "thats a big bitch!"Perdido wrote:Wow. here are a 2 of the most recent pics I have.
I am trying to trim a little bit of weight off of her, but the vet tells me she is right where she should be for her size.
My dog is 2 and still hasn't reached full size. He will be growing after he is 3 probably until almost 4 before he is completely done growing/maturing.
He was 23" and 53lbs at 6 months. Now he is 25 3/4" and 68 lbs. With an estimated finished size of about 26 1/4" and 72lbs. Just a guess from looking at the pedigree/parents/growth rate. But I imagine he could end up anywhere from 25 3/4" 70 lbs to 27" 78lbs. No exact way to tell until they get there I guess.
