I have a Cabelas gift certificate and I've got it narrowed down to these 2 vests. Opinions?

I like that they come in tan only and I can use them for dove season as well. How hard is the Filson to clean the game bag?

Filson is the best and is worth the extra money.

I'd go with the second one. Filson makes great stuff from what I hear but you end up paying to much for the name. I like the looks of the second better also.

I have two vest's. One is a heavy vest I use late in the year and the other a lightweight nylon mesh one in blaze orange. The nylon one cost about,,I'd have to guess, it's over 20 yrs old and still going well. The other was a present from my brother well over 20 yrs ago. No need to spend a lot on a vest.

I like the Filson, only because it has the shell holder on the inside. Those outside shell holders will fray quickly and you will lose shells. I have had vests of that style and ended up tossing them. I think some of the cheaper ones on that page would serve you better.

You've obviously never owned anything made by Filson or you wouldn't spout that kind of nonsense.

Your right I never have. But I have hunted with lot's of people that have had Filson stuff. Very nice over priced stuff. I like them, I just wouldn't pay for them. Like most things, as the name becomes better known it fetches a price of it's own. If you could have the exact same vest made of the same material and put together the same way without the Filson name tag, it would be $20 less! Or somewhere around there.

I know I am just the new guy here, but trust me when I say that Filson makes some of the nicest product. You definately get what you pay for, and Filson is worth every cent.

A friend of mine's dad still wears his filson wool jacket every winter, that he purchased back in the 60's. That was enough proof for me to throw down $300.00 on a Mackinaw Wool coat and vest. I wear them every winter, and have owned them since 2000. I could go on and on about friends and family that use Filson.

I have yet to hear anyone say anything negative about their quality. Let's see if anyone chime's in and breaks my lucky streek.

Ive never had either but I think the cabellas verson looks like a better vest... Just my 2 bits

ps. mine only cost 20 and it works fine but my dad has one that cost around 100. Its probly more cofortable and looks better but they both cary shells and birds, thats all I need.

That's the deal with Filson. You will pay alot more upfront but it will be the only time you have to buy it.

As much as I love Filson, I don't have one of their bird vests. I have a two coats and a pair of the pants. I love them all. I do, however, have the Columbia Grouse X vest. It's pretty nice and very comfortable. Some people don't like the speed loader shell tubes but I don't think they've had experience with them. I've never had any trouble with them. I've used it pretty hard and it's no worse for the wear. I might switch to a strap vest, and if I do, it will be a Filson.

My winter or late season is a Columbia. With a heavy wool shirt it is warm. My orange one is a Wick. Nice thing about the Wick is the exterior shell loops. Rather than that spandex stuff that does come apart and is more bother than anything, my Wick Has sewn in heavy nylon individual shell pockets with a flap that fold's over and velcro closers. It also has a pocket that the old type transmitter's slid right into and my sergical clamp clamped right onto to the inside, never lost one.

Don,

Do you ever make it over to the west side for any hunting? I lived in Oregon my whole life until about 8 months ago.

When I was young I lived in Monmouth for quite awhile, graduated Central High. I trained out of a kennel in Scappose but didn't do a lot of hunting on the west side. As a kid there was lot's of phesant's, more importantly, places to hunt them. Seem's that's pretty much gone now. But I have always loved central Ore and most of my Oregon hunting has been over here. It's not what it used to be but then neither am I. Don't know if I could make the climb up from Cottonwood Bridge but thinking about giving it a try again just to look down on the river from there. Just one more time!

Have hunted the coast range a bit between Falls City and Valsetz. Lived in Valsetz then tho. I like more open country. Took some grouse out of up there but not a lot. Not much room for shooting when you do find them. Hunted up by Marion Forks, toward Detroit last year and moved a pretty good number of grouse. Certainly easier to get on there than the coast range.

But the Willamette Valley around Independence and Monmouth and out to Airle and over to Bunea Vista was where I hunted most. Went to school with all the farmers kids!

Where are you at now if not in Ore anymore? I'd have guessed Hood River had I knew you were in Ore. Da Hood?

I am also a big fan of Wick products.

I have never bought any Filson products but recieved a pair of their bibbs as a gift. They make very durable products but the wax cotton is heavy and hot. There are a lot of wind proof/water resistent products available that are cooler, lighter and a lot less expensive.

I live in Queen Creek, Arizona, it's southeast of Phoenix. I lived in the McKenzie River area most of my life. Pretty good grouse and quail hunting around there if you can get a shot off. I've also took my share of elk and deer out of there but that was mostly before I started spending my time birdhunting. I always enjoyed central and eastern Oregon and hunted out that way a few times near Prairie City, Ukiah and down there out of Lakeview. It's a whole different deal down here but parts of it are similar to central or eastern Oregon, just alot hotter and drier but I enjoy it.

I have a remington vest I got on clearance for 12 bucks. It has served me well for 10 years +. It's comfortable, holds my shells and birds. It is silly to me to pay out the nose for something like a vest or gun, ect when you can find other products that perform the same at a much cheaper price. Why not save the money for more hunting trips, or another dog. I have a buddy that gives me crap for shooting my 15 yo mossberg 500. He says to get a $2500 SKB like his. I always ask him why. My 500 kills the birds just as dead as his SKB for $2300 less.

Well, I have some filson stuff and I like it. I also have some Cabelas stuff and I like it as well. Having said that, I don't like those style of vests, as I want the weight more evenly distributed. You put a couple birds in there and a full load of ammo and those straps feel like wire. Just my opinion.

If you are cool with the straps, then I would say get the filson vest.

Either way, Cabelas will take care of you if you don't like it or something happens to it. I've always been impressed by the customer service!

I have a Quilomene vest and really like it. They size it to you, so it fits perfectly.

I'm sure you probably have purchased your vest already, but I thought I'd throw these thoughts out there anyway.

1) Never knock Filson. They are made right here in the USA. I have sold a ton of their stuff and own a bunch of it. It all has held up exactly as it is proclaimed it would. Having worked with the company directly, they are in business to take care of their customer. As mentioned before, the only problem is that their products last too long.

2) I personally own this vest: http://www.initial-attack.com/outdoors/ ... /SB420.htm

It's great because it is so versatile. I really like the support belt. It helps to distribute the load so no sore shoulders (from the vest at least). I have their hydration bag as well so I can carry a lot of water. I declare that they are a must have for the avid chukar hunter but I have also used it out in KS packing around a limit of hefty roosters. Check out their site, they make a lot of cool stuff and like Filson, they are made right here in the good 'ol USA.

Well, the guy says he has a Cabelas Gift Certificate. Of all the other suggestions for other brands, which will accept the Cabelas Gift Card????

Here's my suggestion. I own a lot of Cabelas and a lot of Filson. I love every bit of it. Neither of these companies puts out low quality. And both back their stuff to the "T".

From Cabelas this would, in the long run, be better suited for an all'round vest:

PVA.org needs you to send them 3 bucks.

Thanks for all the input. I went with the Filson and it looks like a very well made product and if it holds up as well as my Filson chaps I'll be happy.
One thing that I liked about the Cabelas vest were the cinch straps on the back to hold a rolled up coat on the outside of the game bag. I have a buddy that is a saddlemaker and I think I'll have him sew a couple of leather straps with brass buckles (to match the buckle on the front) on the back.
Thanks again!
