Pup eating poop
Is it normal for a 6-month old to eat poop? They love apples and carrots.

I have a almost 6yr. old GSP that has done it all his life. Helps me keep the kennel clean.

Her breath smells like death afterwards. She seems to always want kisses after that.birddogger wrote:I have a almost 6yr. old GSP that has done it all his life. Helps me keep the kennel clean.

Yes. Some say it has to do with missing nutrients in their diet. I don't believe that. Some say it is a survival instinct - clean up your pup and no one will know you were there - same reason they eat placentas. This is agree with.
As it has been so cold , my pup likes to bring in a frozen piece and eat it in the warmth. Not acceptable.

Re: Pup eating poop
Eating placentas is what helps turn the milk on. All animals do it including cows and others.

One of my GSP's did that as a pup. When she got older, she'd raid the cat's litter box when no one was paying attention. I never was able to break her of that habit because I rarely caught her in the act. She was 14 when she died, so I guess it had no ill effects ...

My 11 year old female ACD has eaten a ton of it. She is the healthiest dog I have ever owned.
BTW I have two GSP's and they do not do it, but the ACD eats all of theirs.

Perhaps picking up the poop and the dog won't eat it.

Yuck, a few of our beagles are nasty like that. I have heard that adding fresh pineapple to the diet will discourage it (pineapple flavored poop tastes bad....not the great taste that comes with plain poop). Also, there are things you can add (powdered stuff) to their food to make the poop taste bad, LOL.
Re: Pup eating poop
My boykin doesn't... It's the only thing I can put in the dam holes in my yard so he doesn't keep digging in them!

Re: Pup eating poop
It's called - Coprophagia or Coprophagy.
I assumed my dogs liked deer and rabbit turds for the chlorophill, they all have ate it - some more than others. Dog poop too. Keeping the area cleaned up works to prevent it.
From Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coprophagia
or coprophagy is the consumption of feces...

Re: Pup eating poop
True, but when a peson has more than one dog in outside kennels it is literally impossible to do 24/7.Keeping the area cleaned up works to prevent it.
