As far as I know, it is perfectly legal and permissible to carry actual firearms as checked baggage. I believe you must keep the ammo separate. There may be some locales, such as NYC where carrying a firearm though the terminal is a technical violation of local laws, but again...As far as I know... a blank pistol is NOT considered a firearm by the ATF so it should not matter.
The geniuses at the TSA might have other ideas however. They have shown a definite tendency to invent regulations where none exist.
I would contact them in advance and get something in writing from a "responsible person" if you can actually find one at that agency. This way, if something is said at the terminal, you can beat them over the head with that piece of paper.

Second the calling ahead. I know what NOT to do at the airport,I was in line,my wife was outside smoking, when I got to the counter the guy asked me " what's in the bag, I responded with " Damfino,it ain't mine, before I could get out that it was my wifes, they had the thing dumped out in a huge heap on the table,it was as if they had single handedly caught the shooter from the grassy knoll. Most folks are pretty good,I'd consider borrowing one in california, just eliminate a potential headache, going and coming home.

It all depends on how well you like full body cavity searches.
Re: blank gun in checked baggage on plane?
I think you should just pull it out of your bag at the security counter and ask the guy if it is all right to bring it along.

Just treat it like a real firearm and declare it at the counter. It must be in a lockable approved case and you will have to demonstrate that it isn't loaded. It is not a firearm but if you don't treat it as such and they see it on the Xray, your bag will be pulled.
I travel with guns all the time and it's not that big of a deal.

thanks for the replies....
since I'm not a fan of the body search, and I hate red tape, and standing in lines, I think I will just borrow one out there.
Beside, unfortunately I'm booked on an American Airline flight.... thats not looking so wonderful either!
Off we go into the wild blue younder.......

Southeast of Sacramento about an hour...in the foothills near Jamestown. Rolling oak foothills lots of granite outcroppings...can be really nice in the spring, and in the fall after a rain...but oh so hot and dry right now.

If it wasn't so far I'd come come up there and help. Sounds like a good time ahead.

Fuzznut, since you're flying American, be sure to bring a wrench to tighten your seat as well.
You could live without a dog, but it would not be worthwhile.
