Favorite breed?
There have been some awesome topics lately. Really like the forum. Informitive and helpful folks!
Was wondering what everyones favorite breed is and why? To date, Id have to say mine is Lab, mostly because its all Ive owned. Until now. I lost my Bailey to a "bleep" for a neighbor, long story, that ends in ME the one in trouble, get pissed every time I talk about it, still, Nov 2009. Anyways. I love labs, but after I lost Bailey, wanted a pointing dog, and after research, I have a English Setter, Zoie. LOVE her. But she is 15 weeks, so, so far, Im partail to labs, hoping the Setter will change that.
Everyone has a "look" they love, a memory that idolizes a dog/breed, ect. I honestly love all dogs, its a sickness I think. But time, space, and finances only allow me a pup or two. I chose the setter cuz I wanted a pointing dog, love their looks, and found a breeder I got really comfortable with. Wish it was more in depth that that, but at this point, thats it. Didnt want to buy another lab, as I would have felt I was "replacing" Bailey, which is impossible. And, Id hunted over a few pointing dogs, and loved it. So for now, my list goes
1. Labs
2. Setters
3. English Pointers-heard good things and that they are "all business" -Ill have one of them soon I have a feeling!

Re: Favorite breed?
Weimaraners for me. I had lots of dogs growing up with my family, but the Weim is the first one for my wife and I together, and the breed in general seems to develop a very special bond with their owners.
I like most versatiles, and find DDs (slick coated) and Pointers particularly interesting.

Whatever breed you have at the time, if they're good examples of the breed and mentally sound, you grow to first appreciate and then love them for what they are . OK. Except for MinPins.

Re: Favorite breed?
I've had setters, pointers, one lab, shorthairs and a Vizsla. They have all had their pros and cons.
I'm presently all about the shorthairs, but that is more about Rick and Brenda than about the breed.

My top pick would be a GSP (obviously!)
Then Boxers, I lived with two and they are just so goofy
and Vizslas because I love their looks

I think Irish Setters (not show) are the best looking dogs there are. They are georgeous IMO.

Re: Favorite breed?
English Pointers- Don't believe all the BS about them being all business. I have 4 and while the pups will be pups the 2 adults are business in the field but love attention at home in the yard and occasionally come in and take a nap with me.
Catahoulas- Someday if I ever move somewhere where I can coon and hog hunt I am going to own one just because they look mean and they are the state dog of my home state of Louisiana
Bluetick Coonhound- Because of the bark and they just look like a redneck dog. My wife won't let me have one now but if I ever move where I can coon hunt I will have one.

Re: Favorite breed?
Since my new pup from MrCreole is a pointer/gsp cross I get to rate them both evenly! Sure, she's not here for another couple weeks, but I can have a biased opinion...lol
But Seriously, my favorite dog has to be the Leonberger. I'm sure my new pup will put up a heck of a fight for the top spot, but my Leonberger Gretchen was by far the friendliest/smartest/best dog I've been around. If you're not familiar with the breed, do yourself a favor and look into them. They're fantastic...

I was lucky enough to have one as a kid that still had a lot of bird skills. She was a real looker as well.
Starting to see more Irish with some bird instincts Not just the Reds which are real nice too.

Re: Favorite breed?
Any dog with a personality!!! Labs, EP's & Setters... I've always liked Jack Russells too... Had a friend with one that we used to squirrel hunt with. If that thing weighed 300lbs it would have ruled the world! But I think my favorite is a Lab... My EP pup is workin on my heart tho'!
Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.

English Pointers!
I love Boxers, had several growing up. My wife has a Redbone I've grown very fond of too.
Unless it will be a working dog I don't believe in buying or breeding though. To many great mutts that need homes.

Britts are the best looking of all dogs. Their coloring and eyes are amazing. People simply can't walk by them without commenting on them. My GSPs and DD got looks, but not nearly as many.
Speak kindly to me, beloved master. Revel in my unconditional love, and give me every minute that you can spare, for my time with you is short.

I’d love to experience every breed of bird dog before my time is up. I grew up with Britt’s so I would say they’re at the top of my list. I do love my current little mutt (gsp/springer). I’ve always wanted to have a coonhound and also a blue heeler.

This is a tough one. I don't know if it's the breed or the dog itself that makes a favorite.
I curently have 4 GSP's, 2 setters, 1 Large Munsterlander, and a new EP puppy. All of them endear themselves to me for different reasons.

Re: Favorite breed?
Oh my I have had sooooooooo many many good dogs through out my life as a "dog mom". I don't know if i truly could say I personally have a favorite breed. If I did have to pick my tops would be:
Llewellin Setters--I currently own 5 and I must say of all the hunting dogs I have handled and worked with these seem to be the most personable of the upland game dogs. I must also admit here that 2 of my dogs sleep w/ me every night and as I have not been in great health my female has taken quite the 'nurse" position. She nudges me when I need to get my medicine and curls up with me when I don't feel well. She's also protective of me...and not in the "i'm gonna bite anyone that come near my master" but always keeping an eye on me to make sure i'm ok.
Other great dogs in my life include but are not limited to Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, Labs and the like.
But I can not discredit the Healer and Aussie Breeds.
I have to say I hold a special place in my heart for rescued dogs as well. Some of the best "family" dogs I've had were nothing more than mutts. I currently own a 16 yr old Shep/Husky/Heeler/?? female that has been a very good dog.
But truly I believe you can find great dogs in any breed (or mix of) if you look hard enough and find a reputable breeder.

My favorite all time breed is the Pitbull. They are loving, loyal and wonderful family dogs. Not only are they intelligent, they are very easy to train and make awesome companions. I've owned Pits for neatly 20 years and will always own one.
My favorite small breed is the Pekingese. They are fun and loyal. They're smart and easy to train. I've owned one for the last 10 years and will always own one.
My favorite hunting breed is the English Pointer. They are competitive, smart and easy to train. The are stylish in the field and make great hunting and field trial dogs. I've owned them for 15 years now and will continue to have one as long as I can physically keep up with one.

I also owned a Rottweiler in the past. He lived until the good old age of 11. He was a wonderful companion and is still missed. Other breeds I've owned and like are visla, gsp, shihtzu, min pin, westie, dachshund, cockapoo, great dane, newfoundland, blueheeler, mastiff, and some mix breeds.
I currently own a Pitbull, a Pekingese, a Toy Fox Terrier, an Australian Shepherd and 6 English Pointers.

AKC doe not make the rules but only enforce what the breed clubs tell them too. In other words there may be such a thing but it is not reconized as pure by the Wiem people in this country.LincolnAlexander wrote:Yes Long haired Weimaraners are real , though in the AKC it is considered a disqualifying fault conformation wise.baileydog2007 wrote: I didnt want to start a new thread for this, but is that even a real breed???
