Age to bring puppy home

Post by Mo123 » Wed May 17, 2006 8:24 pm

What is the correct age to bring a new puppy home and why ? I have heard some say 8 weeks is best but have heard of others bringing theirs home at 5 weeks.

I've been told 49 days ( 7 weeks ).

I brought my pup home @ 7 weeks from a very reputable breeder. This is a very crucial time for a puppy. Their social development moves much more quickly than a human's.

There are others here whop can probably elaborate much better on this subject than I can.

I won't let a pup leave before 8 wks and up to 10 is good. Yhey should be in their new home by 12 wks.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

From what I have read in Byrnes's book she advocates pups in the 7-12 week age period start to imprint with humans (become people orientated) , and be taken away from the litter. If left with the litter past 12 weeks pups will become more dog orientated and may never reach their full potential.

7 1/2 weeks is the earliest I would let anyone take a pup I sold or take a pup I bought home. Pups are a pain in the butt to take care of and when someone gives you a 5 week old pup it is because they don't want to take care on it any longer than they have too.

8 to 10 weeks. 7 weeks is ok for dogs like seeing eye dogs that need to be very people oriented, but hunting dogs need to be more independent and bird oriented and have had opportunity to learn "dog language" so they can relate normally with other dogs they meet in the field.

7 weeks at the earliest in my opinion. I don't think there is ever a real set time that a pup has to be in the new owner's home. Lots of people still want to get a started dog, or an older hunting dog, and at times those types of dogs can be over a year old. They don't make any less quality hunting dogs or pets.

I've heard advocations for 5 weeks because that's when a pup starts to develop bonds and such, but I really think that is just too early to separate any pup from the litter.

At my kennel we don't let pups go until minimum 9 weeks and usually keep the pups until 10 weeks. I will not let a puppy go at the "magical 49 days" (Thanks a lot Wolters!!!!)

We set a weekend just after they turn 7 weeks to let people come pick. If shipping we will send them after they are 8 wks.

I picked my pup at 7 weeks. She seems to be testing our authority a lot, and I was wondering if this could be because she was so young when she was taken from her litter. Of course she was the only female and the smallest, so maybe she's just making up for lost battles with her brothers!?
Any ideas?

I just got my GSP pup at 7 weeks as well. So far she is doing better than any pup I have ever brought home. I don't know if 7 weeks is really "magical," but I would not bring a puppy home any earlier. I'm in agreement on the 7 to 10 weeks.

I would question any breeder trying to send a puppy home with you before 7-12 weeks.
