Bird Building Fire
Bird Building Fire
What a way to way to wake up! My wife woke me up to inform me that my bird building was on fire! Luckily it is winter and I have been done hatching birds and raising chicks for a couple of months now but it sure doesnt look like I will be raising any next year. The building was fully engulfed by the time I got out there ( which didnt take me long) and there was nothing I could do. There werent but a handfull of quail left for training this winter but I did lose ALL of my fantastic homers that I spent years building up to. With the help of insurance and time I should be back in business late 2011. Guess I will be buying my birds from other people this year.

If I was a betting man I think my wife has started smoking........ Seriously though I think it was electrical.

There are so many fires related to heating during the winter. That sucks man.

Sorry to hear that Topher i know you do a great job with the birds & i hope you get back in business soon.
Re: Bird Buiding Fire
Thanks for all the well wishes! This isnt some little ole pigeon coop either, its 20x30 with concrete floors. It holds a few birds.... I could have seen this happening when I had heat lamps and such on baby chicks, but this time of the year I dont have anything running! Oh well, maybe I will be able to rebuild bigger and better! I am sure that is just what my wife wants to hear!

Re: Bird Buiding Fire
It's more work but protecting all of the wiring with conduit to prevent birds, mice or other animals from getting through the insulation to the wires is one idea. Another is to use the more sensitive GFCI breakers that trip sooner in the event of a short is another idea. Again I'm sorry for your loss & you didn't ask for safety ideas but I couldn't help myself.

Re: Bird Buiding Fire
Yeah BS I have already put conduit in the plans for the next building, along with some cooler additions! I hate to change the subject but I really have to give a HUGE applause for American Family Insurance. I called them about 10 am and at the adjuster just left at 1pm. I already have a check in hand! Now that is some great turnaround time!! I cant wait to start cleaning up.

Re: Bird Buiding Fire
Bad news! Did you get enought to re-build? When I built my houses I left electrical out. I need lights or heat, I run in a drop cord. My house's aren't minsulated either. Wanted light's in the house with the new homers the night I brought them home and out a batery operated lantern in there. If I lived closer I'd come help.

Re: Bird Buiding Fire
I agree with GFCI breakers but I have to ask what kind and how old is the panel this was fed from?
Breakers should trip period before a fire and I would worry about other loads on that same panel box.
I would also be looking to make sure everythiing is grounded properly, again breakers should prevent fire, somethings wrong
back at the panel , with the ground or the way the neutral is bonded.

Re: Bird Building Fire
Sorry about your fire, but I'm glad the insurance didn't give you any hassle. 20 x 30 would definitely hold some birds!!! Look forward to seeing pics of the new and improved version this spring.
