Help... Dog won't put any weight on front leg

Post by txgsp » Wed May 05, 2010 10:05 am

Alright so long story short, I got home last night and my 8 month old GSP wasn't putting any weight on his front left paw. He wasn't whining or sitting around sulking. He was kind of just going about his business and limping around everywhere. I am thinking it is one of two things:
1) he went to the groomers and they clipped his nails too short and then he dug in one hard spot in the yard. Maybe his nails are down to the quick on that paw?
2) he broke his toes or something

I am really hoping he didn't break anything, but how can I be sure? I feel like he'd be whining a lot more if something was broken. Would he be in that much pain if his nails were down to the quick?

Any help would be appreciated...
-William

I've had this show up on my dogs off and on.

Was just a muscle pull..

2-3 days it was gone.

Check the elbow- flex it back & forth....... watch his reaction.

Check his pads, look to see if any are torn, have an abcess or have a thorn or anything else
sticking in them. If not, flex the wrist back & forth....... watch his reaction.

If nothing improves after 1-2 days, get him to the vet at least for blood work, it could be gout.

The only time he really gets jumpy or reacts is when I touch the tips of his paws or squeeze the middle two toes. It seems like the tips are really sensitive on that paw.

Bending his elbow, etc. is not problem for him.

Besides a possible sprain or injury, he could be experiencing growing pains. I'm probably not spelling this right, but it's called panosteitis. My older gsp started showing signs around 10 months, and it lasted until around 16 months.

If he's sensitive in one area, I might be thinking an injury though.

So yall don't think that it could just be the quick of his nail showing through??

certainly, it could be the quick. If that is the case, he should be better in a couple of days.

I may just take him in to the vet in the morning to be sure. Although, I must say that he's got the whole 3 legged running thing down haha

Dropped him by the vet this morning. Just irritation from his quick of his nails. He's already getting better. Just pain meds and time.
