Home made bird release.

Post by Two Bears » Sun Aug 23, 2009 1:35 pm

I had a little time today and decided to make a bird release. Its manual right now but some day I will add electronics to it if I can find a reasonably priced mechanisim to attach to it.

What do you think?

I used a wire shelf that I had no other use for cut to size and zip tied together. It's pretty sturdy and it is quiet when it is tripped and opened.

Makes mine look mighty unsophisticated:

But can you stuff a half dozen or so of them in a jeans' pocket?
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.

I like it two bears. The simplicity of it with the wire shelving and the wood and a simple spring is genius. It makes me want to build one myself.

Looks good. Maybe you should attach a piece of fabric to it so the bird will launch.

I am thinking when you release the lever the bird may just sit there?

Thanks for sharing. I can't see spending big bucks on a launcher either so maybe I will follow suite.

The bird should get up and out on it's own some may fly out but some will hop out then fly (I hope). Either way it should work.
I might even put a divider in it and have 2 doors to release so we can simulate milti bird flush, let one go then when the dog holds release the other one.

nice. im all about the homemade stuff.

I would put the fabric in to launch the bird only for the fact that i wouldnt want there to be chance of a delay from the time i pull the cord till the time the bird flies out. i have lazy birds, the whole thing basically needs to be instantaneous: pull cord/bird flies. i think they are too fat and just dont like the Florida heat. either way though, nice to see pictures of some homemade ingenuity

it almost sounds like it could work as one of those higdon (sp) releasers. Put the bird in and let them calm down then open it up and let the pressure of the dog flush the bird

Just keep in mind that you're not guaranteed a flush when you release the bird. A big part of using remote release bird launchers is the fact that the trainer can put the bird in the air in an instant - like right when the dog acknowledges the scent cone. Bird launchers are used in this manner to promote the pointing instinct and steady to wing.

I'd be more apt to just dizzy the bird and either tuck its head under its wing (used when the dog is on a checkcord), or dizzy and toss into the weeds (it will hold until a dog gets near or the trainer kicks it up - used when dogs are sufficiently trained to point and hold).
