What breed of dog would you NEVER want to own?

I'm not starting this thread to bash any breeds, but just wanted to comment that with such a variety of dogs we have to choose from, there are simply some breeds you can simply say is not and will never be for you. I'm sure my GSP would make the list for some people and would not be offended.....well, ok, maybe a little

Here's my top five

1)Hairless Chinese Crested - My brother-in-law's ex-GF had one of these dogs....The dog needed to be covered up if it was too sunny (to prevent sunburn) or too cold. Not easy on the eyes either.

2)Chihuahua - I've come across too many of them with "big dog attitude" that love to bark and intimidate you.

3)Great Dane - Cool looking dog, but I don't have a barn to keep a dog that size around. Very short lifespan.

4)Bedlington Terrier - I would be too embarrased to walk this dog out in public. :roll:

5)Shar-Pei - I admit that they look pretty cute as a pup, but as they age the temptation to seek out a good plastic surgeon would be overwhelming.

wouldnt want any thing smaller than one of my dogs toys
except mabey a boston terrier down the line always kinda like them but thats when i cant get out in the field anymore so along wways away

I will only comment on ones that I have either owned, or been around quite a bit.
1. Jack Russel - way too hyper all the time
2. Yorkie - the one we had was not as hyper as the Jack Russel, but it was so small and quick I was always afraid I was going to step on it, and the one my aunt has is as mean as any dog I have ever been around - luckily it is too small to hurt anyone
3. Great Dane/Mastiff - way too large, ate more in a week than my GSP does in a month, heck of a guard dog though. When people pull up to the farm they would just sit in the vehicle and honk the horn.

Those are the only ones I have long term experience with that I don't ever plan to own, all the others have been good to great pets.

1. American Eskimo (In 15 years of boarding dogs I haven't met one yet with even a halfways nice temperament.)
2. Pug (haven't met one yet that could breathe)
3. Pomeranian (all bark and bite)
4. Pekinese, Lhasa Apso, Shih-Tzu, Silky Terrier, or any other breed designed to be a mop.
5. Any protection breed that is bred by insecure folks who think that "mean" equals "tough".

Chihuahua - I have worked with I'm sure over a thousand and have met 3 memorably not agressive ones.
yorkie - for personal reasons

most small terriers. I just am not patient with the attitude. I really do not like aggression, especially in small little dogs.

Any breed short nosed enough to have frequent problems with eyes that come out of the socket. Ick. I am not a fan of eye injuries and some breeds are just incredibly prone to them.

And shar pei, simply because I am allergic to their hair. Oddly they are the only dog I have issues with, but I get hives every time I touch one.

No lap dogs, but then I wonder when I'm 80, if I'll be able to take a gsp sitting on my lap. :roll:

No St. Bernard or any breed that runs around with slobbers hanging off it's mouth all the time.

No Great Danes or other ginormous (?) dogs that die around 7 years old. I couldn't handle that short of a lifespan.

No breeds that have the smashed face/bulging eye/snorty breathing issue.

No extremely hairy dogs like rough collies (grew up with lots of them), that need constant grooming. I'm much more into low maintenance. Although the smooth variety collies are okay.

Almost every protection/fighting breed of dog that we have boarded over the years have been some of the most stable tempered, nicest personality dogs you could ever meet. They were all products of responsible breeders who understood the makings of a true working dog. These would include Mastiffs, Great Danes, Dobermans, Rottwiellers and Pit Bull Terriers among others.

As a whole I have the least trust for German Shepherd dogs - there are far too many people breeding them for the wrong reasons and they view the unstable temperament flaws as positives. We see the most of them and even the good ones have a look to their eye that I don't trust. Many only make one visit to the kennel.

Smashed face dogs, most of all bug-eyed flat faced dogs. A friend had a pekanesse that's eye ball popped out while playing with their doberman. I held the dog all the way to the vet to keep it from pawing at the hanging eye. We get to there and a little boy in the waiting room wants to see the dog. I told the mom he really didn't want to see it and tried to turn away but she stepped to the other side to show the kid.... The kid's probably still in therapy.

It is funny even on here pits have a bad name and noone wants one. Most people have no clue how they really are and if they did would like them. All dogs can do massive damage if they bite especially big ones. People say I just won't take the chance cause they might bite someone but would be alright to get a shar pei, german shepard, chow, doberman, rott, mastiff, presa canarios, cataholas, huskies, boxer, akita, golden retriever, lab, great dane, malamute, all these can be dangerous dogs. I have to put labs in there cause they bite more people than dobermans and alot of other breeds in the list. Pit owners in gereral are the stupidest people on the planet and if these same people decided one day "Hey those catahola dogs look cool we should all buy them." They would soon become the most dangerous dogs. I have had many pits and bred them, never had one bite anyone or even think about it ever. They are extremely smart and want to do anything the owner wants them to so if they want them to bite they will. Even (every one ) of Micheal Vicks fighting dogs were worked with and adopted out to loving homes with no probelms what so ever. Imagine that even the most fierce, torchured, fighting dog can turned back into pets.

Not to be starting a Pit Bull bashing , what concerns me with them is they are extremely unpredictable. Here in Michigan there have been way to many stories of what was once a great pit bull turn on a child or someone walking passed a house. I will agree that mosy people that own them have no idea what they have , and get them because of there statis.

There are alot of so called dangerous dogs that I feel have no business being labeled a dangerous dog, and I would own them.

That is enouph of my preaching I think.

all toy breeds(although my wife has a shih tzu right now..pretty cool dog, still would rather got a tx terrier or a jagd terrier).

i bred pitbulls for about 15yrs and had one bite a family friend. that friend was a grown man that used to tease my dog all the time. acting like he was going to hit her and all that jazz. i would always tell him to leave her alone(i was in high school, he was an adult), he never did. one day we were at a beach house and the chain was just a little longer than he expected and he got his. other than that i have NEVER had a pitbull bite a human. i had one dog that was 3yrs old and had never seen my sister in law(a 2nd grader), she went in the backyard before i got back there and my little gyp inched over to her and rolled on her back to get some loving. a stranger walked by the back fence and she jumped up and defended my sister in law.

pit bulls aren't unpredictable. they are no more unpredictable than ANY other breed. the problem is when the lab bites his owners kid, it's the kids fault or the neighbors fault and the media doesn't want to publish that a lab bit someone. then when the pitbull does the SAME thing "oh my God, they're vicious animals!" a pitbull is like ANY high maintenance toy(motorcycle, guns, etc.)they are great and you can have tons of fun, but they aren't for everyone. i have never nor will i ever push the pitbull on ANYONE. most people aren't worthy of a pitbull, they are overly devoted animals. you make a pitbull exactly what you want them to be. you can't do that with most dogs. if you are a great owner and know how to handle a strong willed animal then they are great for you. if you don't want to put in the time to make them a great animal then they aren't for you.

i always say don't judge a breed by the dog judge a breed by the owner. i'm sure if some of you pointer people raised a few gsp's they would work they way you wanted them and vice versa. same goes with the pit, the OWNER makes the breed not the dog.

i will admit that i have a soft spot for pits...i love them to death, they have been the best pets i have ever owned....last thing i bet most of you couldn't accurately pick out a pitbull if i gave you a line up of several breeds. that is the next issue, the media will say that every dog bite is a pitbull or a pitbull mix if they don't know the breed and the dog is stocky and cut up.

question...if you have a pitXlab and it bites someone do you blame the pitbull ancestory or the lab...most people will say it is a pitbull cross...why isn't it a lab cross instead...MEDIA...i'm going to try to find that online test that shows a list of different breeds to see if we can pick out the pitbull...

I would just like to say that I agree with some of the previous posters who have defended the pit bull. I have never owned one and probably never will, but I believe the bad reputation is due to irresponsible breeders and owners. I believe some people get them because they want an aggressive dog. You can cause almost any dog to be aggressive and dangerous, if that is what you want. I think some of these owners like the pit bull because of the reputation and power they have. I see alot of them in the bad areas close to where I work. JMO.

Any kind of dog that doesn't hunt birds. I only hunt birds. I don't deer or elk or varmint hunt, just bird hunt. If a dog doesn't earn its keep around my house then they go down the road and any that aren't bird dogs don't do me any good. My wife knows this, my kids will know this when they get old enough to understand don't bring a stray dog home unless its a bird dog, my family members know this and my dogs know this. You don't hunt you don't eat, end of story.

Gee Tommy, you are tough. Thats kind of like telling your kids if you can't shoot you are out of here. There is so much more to a dog or a kid than skill in the upland fields. But I am sure you know that and I think it shows in your other posts and pictures.

If you hunt ground game then a small flexible dog is needed, but if it is coons in barns, brushpiles, abandonded houses etc. then then added size helps. You can't expect a single 14-16 pound dog to hold a big coon in an open area, underground yes but not above unless there is muliple dogs.

This dog couldn't work those coon by himself, being young was one reason but the main reason was the weight difference.

If you cross in a small pit, 28-40 pounds, then the size increase isn't extreme and you cull for what you need. In Europe a larger dog is okay for badger as the holes are large enough for them to enter and work

I know I sound hard Ezzy and I guess to some extent I am. My wife has wanted a chihuahua for 2 years since we got rid of the last one she had that she refused to discipline or house train. We did that when we were still dating. I love my children and my wife but that is my rule. Most things around the house my wife runs and I never argue with. My one rule is no dogs other than bird dogs. It will be hard for me to disappoint my kids but that will be my rule with them as well. I have 3 dogs now and am about to have a pointer litter I believe, will know more after the preg check on the 1st but my kids have plenty of dogs around to play with. If they want to bring home strays they better be some type of bird dog.

I am dissapointed in most of you. You guys of all people should understand that beeding has a massive impact on a dog. That silly survey link is the definition of a straw man argument. They were nearly all fighting dogs. Pitbulls just happen to be the most popular in the U.S.. Fighting dogs, at their best, have extremely low human agression, and extremely high dog agression. They should be good at what we bred them for, attacking, and attempting to kill another dog, no matter their pain or physuical injury. Google "game" dog, and not just in the way we as gun dog owners use it.

If we as a sociey have determined that dog fighting is never a decent activity (i have no opinion, i love watching dogs do what they were bred to do, no matter what, but have never seen an organized dog fight), then we should sterilize every living dog that was bred for the explicit purpose of fighting/killing other dogs. No matter whether the name is dogo argentino, tosa inu, or staffordshire whatever.

the fact that most Westie owners bo longer send their terriers to the ground to root out varmits is not a public safety issue. Half a million idiots trying to various dggrees to train agression out of their fighting dogs is, however. Imagine if quail pointing became the most detestable activity in america today. Would you people keep advancing your breed? How many generations would it take before an EP, or GSP ignored a bird inder his nose?

Go watch a dog fight or a chicken fight and see if you still have the same opinion. These fights are not boxing matches that have Marcus of Queensbury rules, they are violent bloody events that contribute to much more than just a dog killing another dog. Many times there are illegal weapons, drugs, gang members, and oh ya illegal gambling going on at these events. Would you take your child to a dog fight? I think not. I wouldn't take mine but I would take him to a boxing or UFC match. No I am not a card carrying member of PETA either, I am just stating a fact as well as my opinion.

Flocker,

Give me a couple of examples where dogs bred to kill dogs make us a better society. Do they serve some usful purpose today or are they strictly used to entertain someone who enjoys seeing an animal ripped apart? If their main purpose is for our sadistic entertainment then why are we still breeding for that purpose and why should we condone the people who think it is entertainment to see an animal killed by that method? I feel that we need to respect the lives of every animal and if we kill it we need be able to say it was animal that was doing damage to something or it is to be used for food or some worth while purpose. Every animal deserves as much.

I think I did a very poor job making my point. I was trying to advocate the eradication of all dogs that we have bred to fight for our entertainment. For every person that is attacked by a bully breed, dozens of pets are shredded in dog parks, and on street corners without any media attention at all. I think Miami-Dade made the absoulute correct decision to outlaw pits, and hope other municipalities do the same.

Not sure what else I can say, now dissapointed in myself that my three paragraphs could be taken 180 degrees away from my intended point.

Too bad we couldn't ban certain "people" from the whole state of flordia (or any other area for that matter). It would be a nice place to live and we wouldn't have to worry about the pitts being trained to be aggressive and getting a bad wrap.

Wow, strong opinions here. I can appreciate the people who want to defend the fighting breeds, they see the good they feel that these dogs have. Some of you have used the example of Labs or Lab mixes or other traditionally non agressive breds biting people. Lets remember they are Dogs, they are going to protect themselves or there territory thats what dogs do.

Alot of dog bites occur involving dogs that were not treated properly, or abused, left alone alot. and basically not socialised properly as pups. All of us GSP or Setter or even Retriever owners, had to socialise our dogs when they were pups, I did with mine.

The Fighting breeds are just that fighting dogs, thats what they were bred for. I have children , and there is no way I would ever have a Fighting breed in my home with them.

i ephatically disagree with you. i am totally against bsl's because it is the government telling me what i can own and not own. so would you agree if they said you can't own guns? do guns kill people or do people kill people? dogs don't hurt people bad owners hurt people. they should prosecute the owners and not ban an entire breed.

my brother actually just picked up two pitbulls yesterday. i would own a game bred pitbull before ANY other breed as i know the temperment will be MORE stable than any other dog on this board. if any of you TRULY knew what went into a dog fight you would know that there CAN'T be any human aggression in the dogs. the pit bulls that have human aggression are made to be like that. again i wouldn't even begi to convince someone to own a pitbull, but many of you have the wrong idea about them and what they are about.

funny how i only had one person to honestly take the quizz and answer it it....i again state that most of you condemn a dog that you wouldn't be able to pick out in a line up.

But you would have Samoyeds? I would put my kids with any of the Pit Bulls that have come to the boarding kennel over the years before I would send them out to play with any of the Samoyeds that have come to the kennel - most of the spitz type dogs I have encountered have somewhat unstable temperaments.

With out question. My daughter as a baby would lay on my samoyed and drink her bottle and would fall asleep on her. The dog would not move and she herself would fall asleep.

Samoyeds are known to be very very good with children.

I will say that Malamutes, Siberians, Akitas, all of which are Spitz breeds, can be questionable, and I would be very careful if I were going to bring a puppy home.

As for Samoyeds, I will always have one as well as an English Setter. They have proven to me to be great breeds for familys.

I DO Want to apoligise for coming down hard on Pit Bulls. I have never owned one. I did however meet one once that truly was a very nice dog.

As a responcable dog owner, I have to look at my personal situation and that I have a family. I dont believe Pit Bulls would be a smart choice.

Its foolish to have a baby lay on any dog IMO

I have a pit hes agressive with strangers (growls hair up ect my shorthairs do the same thing as does my boykin) and would fight another dog without hesistation hes also wonderful and very docile with our family.

I would not suggest anyone have one thats not very experienced with dogs in general they take alot of careful management. Mines never bit anyone or been in a fight with another dog but he certainly has the tools to do so. He is fearless in the field.

I have a pitbull because my daughter rescued it as a pup I would not intentionally get one.

I agree they are a dangerous dog if for no other reason then they are exceptionally physically suited to do damage.

This dog is also without a doubt the most loyal dog I have ever owned and it is very hard not to admire many of his traits, his athleticism would put any bird dog breed to shame he is the epitomy of power and speed.

I find dog fighting dispicable and really feel for the breed they are misunderstood and mistreated and unfortunately often owned by people that are scum.

We would give him away to a good home but wont because we fear he will end up in a bad situation, fighting or as a hog catch dog, either option means a violent end. Its an obsolete breed in todays society IMO.

I will never allow myself to become attached to another one but mine will be kindly cared for until hopefully he dies of old age.

I dont like rotts and other large agressive breeds for the same reason although I recognize they have a function in certain circumstances I personally dont need these kinds of dogs.
