Camelback

Post by prairiefirepointers » Wed Apr 01, 2009 9:47 pm

Hunting here in South Central Kansas this year was particularly warm for the most part. My lil brother is in the army and bought us both the 3 liter Camelbacks at the base px CHEAP!
While I really love the CB, there is one thing I would like to change for the hunting application. I am tired of hauling a couple water bottles in my strap vest for the dogs to drink out of. Is there any way to convert the tip of the tube on the CB so water can flow freely for the dogs to drink?

Thanks! PFP

Pinch down on the nozzle (to open the nozzle), if the camelbak is full, the water should flow freely.

If the camelbak is not very full, use the same process, but also, push on the camelbak to force the water out.

Just pull the mouthpiece out of the tube and it will freeflow. You need to take it out and clean the tube and mouthpiece anyway or it will grow mold quickly. Especially if you put gatorade in it.

Ditto on the mouth piece part. Don't forget to clean the bag either, that thing will get slimey pretty quick.

You might check some outfitter sites. I seem to remember an oversize bite valve that was available.

Also...you should not be giving your dog Gatorade or any of that stuff. The salt, and mineral additions are for replenishment of things which we humans lose when sweating. Dogs don't sweat and don't lose minerals through their saliva so you are, in effect overloading the dog with minerals. That can actually hurt them. Plain water is best until after the exercise , then, within a half hour of cessation of exercise, a maltodextrin laced drink to rebuild the glycogen levels.

You can get an actual valve, one that your operate with your hand, not a bite valve. It's techincally a Ball valve.
They are made by Camelback and called the HydroLock, and the Ergo HydroLock. I use one on my Quilomene vest which has a built in camelback type bladder. I believe I found my valve at REI. With the valve fully open you get much more flow than with a bite valve pinched open. This can be a good thing, or it can waste water. My hunting buddies prefer the bite valve for watering the dogs, I prefer the hydrolock valve. I would get the Ergo hydrolock over the regular hydrolock as I have the regular one and the valve lever is slightly difficult to open/close and I think it would be easier on the Ergo one.

Here is a the ergo hydrolock

Thanks!

My camelback has a ball valve already on it, so I will just take off the bitevalve. Sweet. Thanks again. :D

I had pretty good luck this year. I was really happy with our hunts, and we hunt one day nearly every weekend.
I rarely travel much over 25 miles from our place to hunt as I have more than enough private ground to cover. We had places we had'nt even hunted yet with only a couple weeks left to go in the season. Yeah, I know.. Spoiled.
