How do you stay on topic?

Post by jakemaster » Fri Mar 27, 2009 10:30 am

When a thread is started you have a topic. I understand this but if someone ask's a question and it leads to a new discussion is that wrong? I see it all the time here yet it only seems to be a problem some of the time. Why is that?

jakemaster- I love this forum and have learned numerous things from the wealth of knowledge here.......having said that, I have grown to like another forum as well, if not better for the reason you have posted. The other forum (which Greg mentioned in the Gent post) lets the topic flow as it may for the most part. As the posts move on people bring up different "tid bits" and they take on a life of their own within the original post. To me these post become some of the most interesting posts on the whole forum and much more active posts than any of the others.

Off topic, I have a pup with Ross now. :D

I guess I got off topic and didn't mean to...to answer your question - I don't think so.

A certain amount of thread drift is expected especially after the main topic has petered out. There are times that we split threads when there is something that comes up that deserves its own thread.

Greg Who decides if it deserves new thread? I understand this I am really not trying to be smarty pants... just seams there is a lot of subjective assumptions made that we ALL need to be aware of. For me I am the worse typer and speller in the world so I really have to think before I strike and leave a bunch between the lines. But to be scared of a lock out because you get off subject shouldnt be. The off topic subject was not the problem in the other thread it was the assumptions and jabs. The mod should ? that or edit it not come on and join off topic then talk about locking it if we dont get back on topic. That kind of just fuels the fire.

The Gent thread went WAY off topic and thats why I asked for it to return to its original purpose. Like Greg said a certain amount of drift is Ok but the Gent thread went to a wholehearted Mod bashing. I dont care if people want to bash us Mods but lets at least start its own thread. The Gent thread outlived its usefulness when it wouldn't return to the origianal topic. Jakemaster has done the right thing here with starting a new thread.

But do you get my drift? You joined the off topic and took some jabs then wanted it to get back on subject. :?
Then Greg and I got off topic about a word ( which I really wanted to know the meaning of ).
I was asked where and why. I gave my info and Greg gave his. whats wrong with that?
I agree some were taking shots at mods no different than when Ross or wildrose or Ray etc. are VIEWED wrong. (not that you guys mentioned are ever wrong).I did not think I was wholeheartingly bashing mod's. Greg did the right thing also he responded and said he would check into. I am good with that. :D

I guess I missed where I took the jabs??? I tried to explain that Ross had been warned and lets get back on topic. As far as your wondering what "vetting" meant that isnt really getting off topic and would be classified as an acceptable amount of "drift". I know what the next question to follow that statement is......"What is an acceptable amount of drift?" I think that is really up to the mod's. We are all unpaid, HUMAN, volunteers so sometimes we may not all get it right. We all do our best. Dont worry either, I dont think your a brown noser

Jakemaster, you used several multi-syllable words and you didn't misspell any of them! (Although, I am not sure if "typer" or "speller" are legitimate words?) That puts you way ahead of the curve on that subject!

Hey, no joke, I started a thread a while back "Unspecified Topic" For that very reason! I like when a thread morphs into another topic and so on. It keeps a thread going. What's the sense in having to sift through a million peanut threads with one or two replies when a simple train of thought evolves into a complexity of Q&A. It's more threads to have to patrol.

10 fingers 10 toes. You just walk in the muddy lake until you findone, when you step on him he pulls into the shell leaving a tail to grab onto and pick up. Skinning him is another thing butwith care it can be done in a safe fashion. I have a pic on the forum of one I got years ago. Made a hat outta his top shell. Learned how to do this in the 60s.

I have "noodled" snappers through the ice. Have you ever done that? Have you ever done so while eating cheesecake? (I think these tangents are perfect examples of the topic)

Can't say I have. Call me crazy but I have never even heard of that movie. I'm not much of a movie person myself. Except for maybe "The Dale Earnhardt Story" or "Hang em' High". Hopefully my chick doesn't read this or I will be watching it... :x

Mention to your significant other if she's ever heard of that movie - chances are she has. You just about quoted a line from that movie ( the coffee shop scene about the selection process)..... now you gotta see it ....

I caught the last half of Pale Rider, but I missed GB&U. Oh well, maybe next time.

Awww, don't be jealous - you too can watch chick flicks & LIKE 'EM.... It'll make a more sentimental man out of you & your spouse/girlfriend would love you more for it... Turn around is fair play - have her watch the Good, the Bad, & the Ugly. She'll love you for it.... :D
