Training Jackson - photo essay

Post by CZShooter » Mon Feb 23, 2009 1:56 pm

Well I haven't posted in quite awhile but I went out this weekend to help a friend train his 12-week old Llewellin pup, Jackson. A grand time was had by all.

We began by using some manual bird releasers and allowed Jackson to trail his checkcord while working into the wind.
Birds were set relatively close to one another (20-30 yards apart) but the releasers were concealed under switch grass.

Image

Jackson seemed to know from the gitgo that he was there for a reason and soon enough, he got wind of a bird.

Image

Once the bird flushed, Jackson stood like a champ and watched it fly away.

Image

We relocated the bird and I was able to capture some of Jackson's intensity. Pretty impressive for 12 weeks.

Image

Later on, Jackson relocated a walking bird and showed unusual restraint for one so young.

Image

When it was clear Jackson was more interested in the birds than what we were up to, a friend fired a small cap pistol when one of the birds flushed and Jackson's owner, Joel Pope, threw out a dead bird to see what the pup would do with it. As you can see, Jackson figured it out.

Image

All in all, it was a great day for what has all the makings of a great pup. Way to go Jackson!

Great photo essay. I especially like the way you posted a step by step process that can be picked up and used by members who maybe do not have as much experience as some on here. Great job and nice looking pup. Keep the photos coming. I'd like to see Jackson grow up via your photos.

Jackson is out of Wingswept Llewellins in Jasper, FL. Don't know the breeding beyond that but perhaps his owner, Joel, will get on here and post the details. What I do know is he is a gem of a pup.

I must say these are among the nicest training pics I have seen on here. The pics capture a puppy full of wonder and eagerness. And at the same time you can see patience and gentleness in the trainer, as if he is as much an observer of this new world for the puppy as he is the agent to it. I imagine many pups get out the first time to be jerked around on a check cord and barked at. Anyway, great stuff!! That pup is a real looker!

Cheers,
Gary

Jackson is out of Wingsweot Kennels, info below

Deane & Virginia Harris
6864 SW 60th Way
Jasper, FL 32052

harris7@windstream.net

Deane is a neat guy, he has been breeding Lewellins for 50+ years and is one of the founders of the American Lewellin Breeders Association. Orvis endorsed and all that, but, most important, he really loves the breed and works to keep his line of "Dancers" true hunting dogs.

Jackson sure is a looker! He's out of Wingswept kennel in Jasper, Florida and bred by Mr. Deane Harris and wife Virginia. His sire is Dandy Dancer and his dam is Mocha Dancer. They currently have some pups available from a repeat breeding between these two. I drove down from Detroit to meet Mr. Harris and his wife, check out the pups and in general look over their operation. You couldn't ask to meet nicer people and the kennel was spotless. And, yes I did pick out a pup.

I just brought a new Llewellin pup home a couple of days ago. My old Llewellin died a few monthe ago. Sam is 2 mos and 13 days old. I got him from Jim YerYar in Midland, Indiana. He had three litters, so he has several left, and are reasonably priced. He's at http://www.yeryar.com

Sam is very happy here. We live in the country with acreage, and we have wild quail close, so he will be getting introduced soon.

Jackson is a good looker! Mine is a black tri.

I don't have any new pix, but Jackson's owner, Joel, sent me a recent pic of Jackson hitting the water for a retrieve and he looked amazing! He is one great looking dog.
