Pics UPDATE (A 1st Place!)Re: Did First Trial Today!
Well, we got our first trial under our belt today. Today was a Derby stake and tomorrow will be a Puppy stake. I was braced alone, but went ahead and got a horse even though I thought I might walk(when in Rome, eh?).
It was kind of a "good news - bad news" experience. The good news was two solid finds and a third "sort-of" find, and for the two solid ones she held point long enough for me to dismount, get up to her, but she did creep in on the flush. While I was dismounted for the first find, there was another find, that kind of went nowhere, as I couldn't really get into the other side of the treeline and make the flush happen before it was over. I call this one the sort-of find. Her third find (really the second "proper" point and hold) was a nice skid-to-a-stop and freeze with a little dust in the air.
Other good news was that she handled well and showed pretty good obedience. I didn't have to scream and holler and blow the whistle non-stop like some I saw. I was able to keep her on course.
The bad news was that she didn't really get out there and run hard like I have seen her do. She had a couple of decent casts, but I have seen her hunt much much harder. I think she was a little distracted by seeing me on horseback. There were 6-8 others and I think she was thinking " am I supposed to be around them behaving or are they all out her for me?" At times she just loped along, and was with us and I'd say "go hunt" and then she would go on. I just felt she was a little wimpy.
This was a derby stake. Although I am completely inexperienced, if I were the judge I would have thought: Some nice finds, held point beyond a derby standard, good nose, handled well, but lacked the boldness/independence/desire required to place.
In tomorrow's puppy stake, she will have a bracemate who I am friendly with (Sambuca here on GDF). Ginger is 13 months and Sambuca's Britt is 14 months. Hopefully with another dog she will get up and go a little harder. I can see now that I have been training a nice hunting dog for a foot-hunter. We'll see how tomorrow goes.
Shout-out to Karen for all her help and being my scout. And thanks to Joanne and Sambuca for help with the horse and release.
Cheers,
Gary

Gary -
Sounds to me like both you and Ginger did just fine. Especially for a first time out.
I personally would be very happy with the fact that your dog went with you as well as she did, hunted for you and responded to you under (for her) very strange circumstances.
Good luck tomorrow in the puppy stake. Have fun.

Re: Did First Trial Today!
Sounds like you and your dog did a nice job today. Without having a bracemate, your dog was at a disadvantage. I'd be willing to bet you see a different type of run out of her tomorrow since she is braced with another dog. Good luck!

Thanks for the kind words!
Update: I had to cut out at 3:00pm today so I was unaware of any results. I just heard from Karen that Ginger placed 4th and earned a ribbon! I could pretend there were 20 or more dogs in the stake , but I guess I will tell the truth:

Sounds like you did great,,,, never discount a placement,, they get real hard to come by. Congrats
Re: Did First Trial Today!
Congratulations Gary!! Ginger did a really fine job. Although unsure of the horses, she had a couple really nice casts where the judges got to see her stretch her legs, and her birdwork was really nice. I'm sure this is the first ribbon of many. See you in a bit. I'll keep Trav tacked up so I can scout for Ginger & Sammy today.

Excellent news!! Especially for the first time... you should be extremely proud. Good luck with the future trials, as since you have the first ribbon, you'll be looking for more!!

Re: Did First Trial Today!
I placement is great regarless what place. They don't have to give all the placements out they can always withhold placements so for you to get a fourth is great says the judges think you have a nice dog it's just they had better than her and they also had worse than her. Congrats Gary let us know how the puppy stake goes.

UPDATE (A Win - 1st Place) Re: Did First Trial Today!
Today the horse-thing was a non-issue and Ginger ran like I knew she could. She took 1st Place (of 8 dogs) in the Puppy Stakes! Needless to say this is very gratifying. There was a bit of many of you out there today, because virtually everything I know about training and handling has come off this board.
What a morning!
Thanks,
Gary

Re: Did First Trial Today!
Congratulations to Ginger and Gary!!! Ginger did awesome.
Gary and Ginger were braced together with me and Sammy (our first brace). Both dogs broke away nicely and Ginger ran great and hunted hard. After Sammy got out about 50 yards he turned around, looked lost (what are you doing on that beast dad?) and came right back to us. Ginger, on the other hand, did her thing and did it very well. Sammy spent a lot of time running out and then coming back confused about the whole thing. I was pleased that Sammy had a very nice point near the end and he held it for quite a while (It took this beginner a while to stop and dismount).
When we finished, I told my wife that Ginger was going to win. It was great to see them do it. Congrats again to Ginger and Gary!!!

We were trying to get a decent pic with Ginger facing the camera and she wasn't cooperating. Finally I knealed down thinking I could hold her towards the camera. Instead, out of the blue, she jumped up and started giving me major kisses and the tail was going crazy. We were cracking up.
