Veteran's Day / Remembrance Day - A Pittance of Time

I remember their sacrifice often ,but Nov 11 is a special day for me - father was overseas from 1939 - 1945 . Amazing he survived , although he was never himself again.

Thanks Dad.

Great post, Sharon. You can be very proud of your dad. Six years spent fighting overseas. I can't even begin to imagine.

Thanks also to Ezzy and others on this forum who served and sacrificed.

Very much appreciated.

Thanks for posting this video, Sharon. It's one of my favourites.

I put it up on my FB page every year at this time.

My Dad. Flew F-4U Corsairs in the Pacific as Marine Corps aviator.

Went down at sea after an attack on a Japanese-held island in the Palau island group. He broke several vertebrae in his back upon crash-landing. He struggled and managed to get himself into a life raft, and then endured one of the biggest typhoons of the war. He was tossed by 30 ft swells. The USS Landsdowne, a naval destroyer, got to him just before sundown. The seamen risked their lives saving him, with their ship taking 38 degree rolls (way beyond the ship's rating). They said another 20 minutes and they would have had to have given up. Lucky to make it.

Dad refused morphine once on board. Tough guy, Spent almost a year in fully body casts with recovery and rheab in mitilary hospitals for the duration of the war.

Loved him beyond words,

Bill

Yep and a heck of a bird hunter too.

After that he got to spend the rest of the War in Stalag Luft 3 where the Great Escape happened.

That is a great photo of an extremely handsome man!

I am upset that even in conservative Arkansas, my Granddaughters did not have school last Thursday & Friday for in service days, yet must attend on Veteran's Day. That is so wrong I can't explain it. Their parents do not share my outrage.
