Sorry don't feel warm and fuzzy about that.

If they don't like there pay they should resign and work like the general public and see if they make $174,000 a year.
Re: Serious, he needs a raise?
How many millions of dollars did he spend to get the job? He probably knew about the pay scale and benefit package going in. He points out that he is a member of the board of directors of a large economic enterprise. In the business world, they would all be fired for lack of output, inability to perform, and general dissatisfaction and distrust by the owners of said enterprise. And he wants a raise. Do something first.
The states could build dormitories for these fine employees to live in, then cut their pay to something appropriate based on their performance.

Why own a dog? There's a danger you know,
You can't own just one, for the craving will grow.
There's no doubt they're addictive, wherein lies the danger.
While living with lots, you'll grow poorer and stranger.

Actually I think the less they do the more they should be paid. I am hard pressed to come up with something positive Congress has done in the last 40 years. Less is more.
I am just saying WDC is the most expensive area I have ever worked. When working in NYC, you could commute by train to less expensive areas, not true in Washington.
Now the fact it is Congress's fault for allowing consulting and lobbying to run rampant does not change the fact of how expensive it is.

If the cost of living is too high in Washington, they are free to go back where they came from. Like the rest of us, suck it up or get out, and quit whining.

They get on average 1.3 million dollars for running their offices above and beyond the salary, additional perks we could not imagine. I beleive, not to long ago the number of millionaires in congress hit an all time high!

They should only be paid whatever the national average take home is. Politics should be a calling, not a career.

They should set it up so that these guys HAVE TO LIVE IN THEIR HOME DISTRICT, among the people that they are representing, not in DC.
With technology being what it is (telepresence, email etc.), they could easily vote and do all the things they need to do from home. Private individuals do it all the time. One my best friends basically runs a company in China from the US and he goes to China maybe twice a year.
If these people were in their home communities, running into their constituents at the grocery store etc., I bet there would be a lot less bull crap.
