Teaching Pigeons to trap

Post by randomnut » Wed Apr 13, 2016 9:01 am

I've got a fairly large coop. I'm planning on making a small 3x3 cage with a in trap and an out trap, and putting their food inside. Sound like a good idea?

Pigeon racers that I know build a 2x2 flat on the outside of the coup. It has a wire mesh door that is on a 45 degree angle when closed and raises to open. Young birds can come out and look around even when it is closed. The trap door is built right next to this platform. Birds that return and find the big door closed but are able to land on the angled door will pop right into the trap door.

I use 4" 45 elbows for my traps. I will push my young birds through once or twice a day until they know how to get in. Generally same thing. Put food out then push them through the trap. Idea is so they learn when they come back the food bowl is always full. Then I just set them on the landing board and they go right in.
