55 gal plastic drum for horse water at trials

I have seen at field trials that people will fill a 55 gal plastic drum up with water and drive around to fill their horses water buckets up with. Some people have them standing upright in the truck and some are laying down. What is the best way of doing this. I have been hauling water by hand and am looking to figure out other options.

I never thought of having the barrel vertical , that of course would take less room in the truck bed. One problem would be that you would have to install the valve in the side wall and it is pretty thin. Mine is horizontal and sits in a wooden cradle. I was able to install the valve in the middle of the cap. The cap is very thick and it was easy to install and being low the barrel does not present any vision problems. Another thought is when barrel is vertical you would have to climb into the bed to fill.

I searched for horizontal leg tank agricultural 55 gal.

They also make a 35 gal tank which should be enough for one horse for two or three days, unless it is really hot.

I have a 25 gal. upright, triangular water tank that fits in a corner of the trailer. takes up about 1 square foot of floorspace. I know they make a bigger(39 gal) triangular one also.

THe horizontal leg tanks in the PU bed are great. We use one horse camping all the time. The thing I DONT like about the vertical tanks in the horse trailer that they can contribute to too much tongue weight in a bumper pull trailer. Just remember that water weighs 8#/gallon so a 30 gallon tank adds 240#. Our 55 gal tank adds 440# when its full.

Its no problem if you are filling it on site and just filling individual buckets from there.

I agree with the tongue weight thing. I have a bumper pull and that is why I opted for the 25 gallon unit rather than the 39 gallon unit. I always have at least a couple of 5 gal containers in the truck, and one or two 2 1/2 gal containers of water for the dogs, all of which I can refill somewhere if need be. I am considering a tank in the pickup bed because I just changed to a 3 horse bumper pull and now can have all my dogs in the horse trailer instead of in the bed of the truck under a camper cap.

Guess it all depends on how technical you want to get. We carry our H20 vertically in a 55 gal drum in the bed of the truck most of the time. I have been asking hubbie for a valve but he is a tad simple sometimes I get a siphon hose instead :roll: :roll: It works though and filling it back up when we are out on a long haul is easily done at any truck stop either hitched or unhitched. Simple is still funtional.

Jump onto any aquarium site and pick up a powerhead. The maxi-Jet models come with a suction cup holder that would allow you to stick the powhead to the bottom and with a MJ900 you could get 300GPH of flow. Would make fast work of filling horse pails in very little time without the need of a tap.

No matter how full the bucket you will always get the same pressure, just a thought.

We've used the 55 gallon barrel standing up when we're @ trials we have to haul a lot of water. We just us a hose (no nozzle) and syphin the water out till low enough we can tip it. Otherwise we us 35 gallon barrels laying side ways on boards (stand) with a turn on valve and hose. We just bought a 35 gallon agricultural tank to try this fall.

Definately beats packing water in buckets and jugs.

I use a 30-gal drum that stands vertical in my bumber pull. Toungue weight is not an issue with me. 1-ton pickup. I used a boat access panel to install the spigot with a backing nut and 2 rubber seals to create a good tight fit. I added silicone caulking arounf the edges where I cut the hole for the access panel. I have a 30-foot section of hose to reach my water buckets that hang on the back of the trailer. It is about perfect for a 2-day trial. I have about $25.00 in it. Compare that to the price of a new water storage device in a catalogue. Ouch!

I use the typical tack room 25gal./hay rack 35gal. plastic water tanks to haul water from home...those are pretty stationary and not very convenient for hauling water back and forth to troughs at hunting/trialing grounds.

I like these for running back and forth from the water spigot to the horse troughs. They're kind of spendy but tough as nails, last forever, repairable if snagged/punctured, roll up and tuck out of the way when not in use, easy to grab out of storage and throw in the truck bed to run to the spigot, easy to hook a 12V or little gas pump up to. If I'm heading into the wilds where there is no water and need to take more, these roll out easily on the flatbed behind my gooseneck hitch and ratchet strap down very securely for a quick additional 50gals.:
