Update on Buck...

Post by EddieF » Mon Dec 29, 2008 6:28 pm

Some of you may have read about my possible new horse, Buck (I renamed him). I'm happy to report that as of today, it's official! I now own my very own horse!

He has an abscess in his foot right now but that is being addressed. Some other little stuff that the vet isn't too concerned about, particularly considering the level of work he will need to do. But he wasn't holding up for Eventing, which is why we were able to get him for nothing. So hopefully he'll enjoy his new semi-retirement which means occasional trail rides, and me giving him cookies and carrots a lot!

So far I've taken three riding lessons, last time I cantered. That was really fun! My lessons by the way are not on Buck, they're on a schooling horse. But in February or March, we're going to bring Buck over to my trainer so Buck and I can be on the same page. Then by spring I should be ready to ride on some trails!

Thanks. I'll tell you, I'm a long way from getting on him and riding him, but I've enjoyed just spending time brushing him, blankets on and off, just taking care of him. He already sees me coming and comes toward me (I know it's because I give him treats, but humor me...). Anyway, it's cool.

I got some paperwork from the previous owner, a Cogins (?) and some baby pictures. Also a pedigree that seems to be that of his sire, though it's unclear. Anyway, it's an AQHA pedigree. His test reads he is dun/buckskin in color and Appaloosa is his breed. Is an Appaloosa a quarter horse?

Appaloosa is the way they are marked. Most have the blanket(white with small spots in it) over the hip area like Buck. Some are spotted all over and are called Leopard Appaloosas. And there will be some that don't have the blanket or spots but I think are still registered as Appaloosas. They date back to Indian times and are considered a breed today. So you might find some horses and ponies doubled registered, Ponies of America(POA) are all Appaloosas in color.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Appaloosa is a separate breed registry, but there have been outcrosses to Quarter Horses. Coggins test is to check for infectious anemia disease (it's bad news if a horse comes up positive with that) and most states require it of out-of-state travellers.

Just a note, and the previous owner probably already would have told you if Buck can "indian shuffle", so I'm guessing he doesn't. But many Appys are capable of an "indian shuffle" gait that is smooth like the gaited horses.

Congrats on joining the hayburner club. Denise

Hayburner, pasture ornament, old plug... just some of the names the family horses get called.... But it's great. Congrats on having your very own!!! Sounds like he'll have a great life with you. Be sure to tell us about your first ride.... It will seem like a big deal at first, but after a few easy steps, you'll probably wonder why you waited so long! Have fun :D

An indian shuffle can also be referred to as a single foot. I owned a mare when I met my husband and started playing the field trial game. Belle was QH/Appy cross (solid bay in color w/ the Appy stripped hooves) She single footed well and kept up a great gait while traveling alongside the TWH and MFT.

Best wishes with Buck and hope all works out well for both of you.

Here's one article I found that you'll find pretty interesting and informative about the Appy's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appaloosa# ... cteristics
