What do you keep in your trailer?

Post by daddyfid » Wed Aug 27, 2008 9:48 am

Just bought my first horse and trailer for trialing. What supplies do you keep in your trialer? (EX - saddle, buckets, extra halter, WD40, hammer, bug spray) I want to pre-stock my trailer with everything I might need for the horse, dogs or if something breaks on the trailer.

Again, this is my 1st horse, trailer and trial season so I am starting from scratch.

Thanks for your time and information.

I travel with 1 horse and have 2 buckets, 2 hay bags, a large flexible bucket to haul manure away, a small manure fork, a grooming bag (soft brush, stiff brush, curry, mane brush, comb & hoof pick), extra halter, extra girth, leather punch, reins, bridle & bit, 2 saddle pads, saddle, breast collar, fly spray, fly bonnet, lightweight waterproof sheet, easy boots, 2 lead ropes, bucket hangers, baggies of pre-measured grain, a 35 gallon water tank (one of those saddle rack/water tank combos), and a 2-step stool for mounting. I usually keep horse cookies or carrots, lunge whip, an extra lead rode, sledge hammer, and a stake out in my truck.

All the dog stuff is in my truck....stake out, crates, flea spray, feed dishes, water buckets that hang on the crate, flashlights, extra batteries, rain gear, chaps, hats, scarf, brush for the dogs, green & orange collars, flexi-leash, blank pistol & blanks, belt, sunscreen, bug spray, gloves, extra boots and socks, premeasured baggies of food for the dogs, a cooler w/water & fruit for myself, blanket to cover the crates at night if it's cold, first aid kit, check cord, duct tape, hammer, towels, gallon bottles of water. Several different weights of clothing. I'm sure there's more stuff in there.

A couple of items I no longer travel without...

Lyte Now electrolyts! I de-hydrated a horse and this fixed him right up.

A trailer aid. Mine has saved my hide a number of times. No crawling under to change a tire.

Oh ya... I am now carrying ferrier tools to remove my own shoes.

Nothing worse then having a shoe get sucked off by the sticky Georgia mud and have nothing to remove the other.

I carry a nail cutter and puller as well as a rasp.

Brittguy,

You are correct! I bought a 16ft trailer and now I am wishing that I had about 6 more feet. I told the wife that I just need a hores for trialing and not a trailer (figured I would just rent a trailer). A week later I broke it to her that I am tired of riding on our property and that I now need a trailer. I am not sure how to break it to her that I need about $5,000 worth of supplies. I guess that is why they have marriage counseling

Thanks for the list of items and keep them coming.

I have a 2 horse straight load with a dressing room. In the 4' dressing room are the saddles and tack. I have about four saddle blankets. My son often meets me at a trial.

Hanging on hooks are:
one spare bridle,
two complete sets of foul weather gear,
Two barn coats 2 sets of chaps and 2 uninsulated nylon bibs
A bag full of horse currying stuff, hoof picks and hoof knives.
two dog harnesses and rope for roading off the horse

In a large rubbermaid bin I have:
2 blankets(one for each horse)
2 sheets
Biothane reins and a nylon cinch strrap and off billet
A small, cigarette lighter powered tire pump
Compact grease gun and cartriges
2 waterproof saddle covers
lug wrench
large loper (for cutting branches and such)

Behind the bin are the horse tieout lines and stakes
dog tieout stakes
A small camp shovel and children's hoe and rake(for dog poop)

In a Craftsman tool caddy I have:
A few saddle strings and odd pieces of leather
A complete set of farrier's tools(cheap)
1 box of shoe nails of the correct size
spare shoes for each horse(used-already fitted)
Leather punch, an assortment of hand tools and duct tape
three or four lengths of nylon baler twine(farmer's equivalent of Duct tape)
100' of 1/4" nylon rope.
50' of 3/8" rope
Extra parts for bits, snaps, clips, qick links, chicago screws, rivets and such

In a 20 gallon tote I carry :
Horse feed in a bag
scoop for horse feed
Hay net
couple of extra bags

Sitting in a corner:
Manure fork
Coarse bristle broom
2 folding chairs
pair of 14" rubber boots
2 wooden wheel chocks
Trailer aid
plastic wheel dock
wooden chock for trailer tongue

Sitting in the remaining corner:
25 gal. traingular shaped water tank and 15' of hose with a shutoff

Believe it or not there is still enough floorspace for one large cooler.

I carry all the dogs and the dog stuff in the truck.
