Horse trailer with kennels?

Post by mtlee » Tue Aug 12, 2008 9:40 am

Who manufactures these? I've seen them before but can't find them on the internet. Are they custom jobs?? Thanks.

Featherlite use to offer factory made dog boxes not sure if they do at the present . Probably lots manufactures will with a custom order I would be surprised if they made them without an order because the demand would be small compared to their regular production.

I do believe that pic was taken from the side. Every trailer I have seen has the dog boxes in the middle between the LQ and the horses which load from the back, just like a normal horse trailer.

Ok, that makes sense. I just saw the fender and assumed that was the back and the black area was the rear gate let down. Upon closer observation there is no hinge there so it would be impossible for that to be the back gate. So...to the left of that black area is where you load the horses and to the right are the LQ? Is that correct?

I believe the right of that pic is the rear of the trailer, and left is the LQ.

The back of the dog kennels makes the front wall of the horse compartment then on the left (looking @ the picture could be another bank of kennels on the LQ wall or the walk through door into the LQ from the dog area. Normal set up for most dog people/trainers with lots of dogs. We had a guy with a welding shop build our kennels for us. We used metal with circle's (or holes) in it (except for solid floor.) They work well and you don't have to worry about dogs fighting through it but still get lots of ventilation through them. These boxes shown in the picture look pretty darn nice.

Ok, now everything makes sense. I want one of those. First I just need to graduate dental school and pay back all my loans  I emailed my dad that link and told him to get ready b/c in a few years when he's retired and I'm working we're getting a set up like that. He's going to be my horse trainer (thats his thing, been doing it his whole life) and I'll work with the dogs. Its nice to dream!

Matt~
I'll take pictures of our trailer this weekend and put em on here for you to see. Of course we're pro trainers so we have a lot of dog kennels, we carry 5 horses and have 11 ft. on the floor living quarters. Or 4 Star trailer is 30 ft long 8 tall 7 1/2 tall. Works wonderfully, this is the 3 rd trailer we've had like this.

Nice set up! Like the place to hang tie out chains. How many dogs can you haul. Also what is the size are your dog
boxes (kennels) L x W x H what do your dogs weigh on average. I see your boxes are 5 across most i've seen are 4 across.
Is that a 8 ft wide trailer. how wide are the doors entering the dog area.
Thank you for the photos.
sorry about all the questions.

Pam~

All the dog boxes are the same dimentions on the inside of them as a 300 vari kennel, we carry some big (tall/leggy) gsp's and they fit and have pleanty of room and are comfy as well. Don't know if you all could tell but @ the bottom (in the front) of each kennel is a peice of wood which slides up and down. This is so you can slide up and take a hoe and or rake to clean out old/or soiled bedding then slide back down and put new bedding back in. Very handy for sure. Floors are aluminum.

Just a suggestion.

You can secure a stainless steel or aluminum storage rack in a mid tack area or in the the dressing rooom area. On the rack you can put 9 intermediate sized dog boxes and strap them down. I have 50+ # pointers in intermediate boxes and they have plenty of room.
If a dog barfs or relieves itself in the box you can take it out and wash it . That is really tough to do with a built in. If the door or any part of the box breaks, you can replace the whole unitr or any part of it in minutes...again, tough to do with a built in.

If you don't need more than six boxes, you can store food, supplies, whatever on one shelf.

Unless you are a pro, you should not need more than nine dog boxes.

Robbi,

A couple of questions if you would share.

I didn't notice any dividers in the horse area and I assume this is because you haul 5 horses, but how do you load them in? Do they support/lean against one another? Any pix of them loaded up? Floorplan of the trailer?
Are the tags on the dog boxes for general info cards on each dog?
What for truck are using as a hauler? 1 ton? Flatbed?

I bought a used 4 horse slant w/ dress/bunk to get me started that has room for my current 2 TWH's and then plenty of space in the back to build in some boxes for maybe 4-6 dogs(all I ever plan to run) and found out very quickly that it was more trailer than my 2500 HD should really have hooked up to it. Apologies for soooo many questions, but I just bought a 3500 HD and am starting to get my trailer set up now and am getting some pretty good ideas looking at your setup.

I purchased a 5 Horse Ponderosa steel trailer and converted it to a three horse with 8 foot straight wall living quarters and a mid tack. I added the dog boxes to the mid tack area. I only haul 2 or 3 dogs (If I have a friend go with other dogs I just use porta kennels and put them in the living quarters)and I can make my own boxes at home, lucky to have the ability and skill I guess, although sometimes it seems like a curse as friends are always wanting something built. I made this three hole upright box for my trailer, the top opening is for tracker, training collars, dog bowls and other dog stuff. The 3 slot saddle rack should be to the left of the dog boxes but I took it out for the photo. Good luck with your design, it's only limited by your imigination. Most custom welding shops should be able to make a set-up like you desire.

Bruce I don't have any pictures of the horses when their loaded but with trial season fast approaching here in a couple weeks I'll take a few shots to post. No we do not have dividers, we just head and tail our horses (put first one in facing street side, 2nd facing curb side, 3rd facing street, 4th facing curb and 5th facing street). We found that your loosing at least 2" for each divider and that gave us the room for our 5th horse. They have pleanty of room and have never came out of the trailer hurt or damaged (and we've hauled over 30+ hrs). The card holders on the front of the boxes are for the dogs' name tags (registered name & call name) for when we go to trials to help the dog wagon people get what dog(s) they need to bring to us @ the lines. We've always pulled with a 1 ton dually (the dually is so much more better when it comes to hauling we think, because if you have a blowout on your single wheeled pick up truck you risk the possability of it flipping/wrecking both your truck and trailer) a yr. ago we purchased our 1st 07 Dodge 1 ton dually and we're loving pulling with it. We have had the beds taken off our last 3 trucks and replaced with B/W flatbeds (prevents tore up tailgates, fenders ect.... plus we feel we have more hauling room on the flatbed.) I'll work on getting those pictures up here in a few weeks, can't believe time to start trialing again but definatly looking forward to the fall season.
