Ivomec ?

For anyone using Ivomec, do you see a difference in the dogs stools for a couple of days after you give the monthly dose ?

I don't know if it's coincidence or if it's something to do with the Ivomec but two of my dogs get loose stools and a little bit of blood or redish tint to their stools each month after their doses.

Thanks,

1/10th cc per 10 lbs.

Last month I noticed that with Colt. He gets 3/10ths for 50 lbs. Nobody else showed any signs like that and Colt had not before. I wormed him again with the worm paste my vet uses for the other worms and he cleared up the next day.

To me , it looked like signs of hook worms, and right after the worming., his appetite picked up considerably.

Thye are all due for Ivomec in a week. I keep close watch .

Ivomec is good for all worms, except TATE worms. If you use the Bovine type which is also for cattle, Use 1 tenth cc for each 20 lbs. of dogs body weight. My vets. say.---Sonny PS If you give Ivomec to a dog that you dont know its previous treatments for Heart worms, and it has Heart worms, the Ivomec will kill your dog. Sonny

You have the right stuff correct? There are many consitrations and you have to be sure you have the right dilution.

This was posted on the Health Forum for my benefit when I asked about dosages. This vet says there are some types of worms ivomec wont get as well as talking about dosages.

If you are having problems then try something else. I havent ever had any problems, but a few days of loose stools wouldnt be enough of a side effect for me to switch. Good luck

I thought it looked like they had worms as well. I know they don't though because I took samples in the first time it was looking like that. I don't notice and raise in the appetite though. I think next month I'll just try a little less dosage and see what happens. I don't notice anything like this from the Strongid.

LIke I said, I'll watch close this month. I noticed it with Colt the day after the Ivomec. Second day, I wormed him and on the 3rd, his stool was very firm again.

I reckon if it happens again, it is the ivomec and we'll go in another direction.

So what would be so bad about a day with a soft stool that you would consider changing wormers. Most wormer cause soft stools but I haven't noticed it with the Ivomec. Wormers have a laxative effect to aid in getting rid of the worms.

Soft is one thing Ezzy, but what caught my attention was the slick of blood in the first day. All my dogs will have a day now and then with the runs. It was the first time after Ivomec and to be honest, I didnt even associate it til ths post came up. That's why I said I would be watching

I won't be changing from Ivomec, I was just curious if anyone else has had any of the same effects possibly coming from it. I don't mind the loose stools once in a while that is just part of dogs.

More than likely you are getting a loose stool because of weather or variations in the feed. Even feeding the exact same brand forever you will occasionally get a bag that is "off" is some respect from the norm and it takes a day or two for the dog to adjust to it. The other likelihood is that your dog was wormy and when the Ivomec killed the worms they were released and at least partially digested.

Whoever it was that said they are using Ivomec PLUS you are running a serious risk of liver damage by usiing it. The "plus" has something added for liver flukes that can be toxic to dogs.

I've used zimectrin, and zimectrin paste for over ten years on hundreds of dogs and have always had good results.

It's off label use and you can't use it on dogs that have border collie bred into them such as heelers or australian shepherds because of neurotoxic problems but other than that it's great> CR

The only answer I can come up with about the Ivomec is maybe you are giving to much. Lots of people give onehalf cc to a 50 or 60 lb dog. Thats to much. One tenth cc per 20 lbs.   Sonny

Next time around I'll try the 1/10th per 20# and see what happens.

I have use 1/10cc per 10 lbs for years on my dogs and not had one problem. You can try to give less and see if that helps but don't really think that is your problem.

I use 1/10 cc per 20 lbs, have used that dose for 15 yrs with no problems. That was the dose my vet gave me yrs ago and it has worked, for heartworms and deworming. No changes in stools.

Thats what my vet recommended I've been using that dosage for twenty years will no problems on about 25 dogs.

that dosage is for not only heart worms but other parasites, the dosage for just heart worms is lower.

note this is for 1% ivermectin sterile solution given orally

do not give it to collies or sight hounds like grey hounds and whippets it will kill them

What is the benefit of Ivomec?? Cost? Is it administered in drinking water or a shot?

Posted: Fri Aug 10, 2007 11:14 am
by ezzy333
Much Cheaper. It is given orally. The bottles it come in are big enough you may have to spend to much since you probably won't be able to use it all before it outdates. Check it out and see.

It is a ton cheaper than HEartguard or any of the monthly pills a vet would prescribe. If you look at the active ingredient of the Heartguard its Ivomec. It is administered via oral solution 1/10 cc per 10 lbs. You can find it at any farm supply store look for the cattle and swine solution. Cost is about 40 bucks if I remember right and it will last me about a year and a half with 5-7 dogs.

I just squirt it on a half slice of bread and the dogs eat it right up.

Tractor Supply has it as well as most co-op's or farm stores. Don't let them sell you Ivomec Plus.

You can find it here,

http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html ... b0d0204ae5

The 50ml last me forever with 5-7 dogs. You can also find it at Tractor Supply Store, just ask them where they keep it. You will also need a syringe to extract it from the bottle, I recommend buying a box of them and using a new one every month. After I draw the ivomec I draw up some sugar water with it to cut the taste of it for the dogs and they seem to take it easier for me.

Thanks folks!!! I am assuming you administer it just like a parvo vaccine eh? I was just at the vet getting them tested for the hw's and the vet said it (ivomec) can be used but you have to do it everyday. Is she crazy? What ia the shelf life?

Your vet is nuts if she thinks Ivomec at the dosages we've been discussing here needs to be administered more than once per month. The dosage of the ivomec cattle 1.87% solution at 1/10cc per10 lbs will kill all common gut worms and take care of heartworm prevention as well. heck it even kills fleas and ticks as well! CR

You need to get a 1 cc syringe and it will be calibrated in 1/10ths of a cc,

put a needle on it and draw air into the syringe at approximately the same as your dosage amount and inject it into the bottle to replace the space of the fluid you will remove. You then draw one tenth CC per each ten pounds of body weight, take the needle off the syringe and squirt it in the back of the dogs mouth. You give it orally do not inject it.

Then draw some rubbing alchohol into the syringe and needle and squirt it in the sink, next disassemble the syringe and let it dry completely. you can use the same needle and syringe indefinitely if you clean them in this fashion.

you do this once a month not daily, use 1% sterile solution only

I just bought a bottle for 38 bucks its cattle and hog wormer by the label.
Any feed store will carry it a bottle lasts my a good while and I have 9 dogs.

DO NOT give it to collies or sight hounds like greyhounds or whippets it will kill them

Thoes 1cc syringes around here are getting very hard to find. CO OP and local feed store have 3cc. The only place I can get them is from local vet, even Foster and Smith dont have them. Guess the 1cc which is about the diameter of a pencil are convient for the drug people. But you cant beat the 1cc which shows the 10 tenths. Sonny I said one tenth cc for each 20 lbs of DOG, thats plenty.

I have been using IVOMEC for some time. My question is at what time do I need to stop it on a female thats gonna have pups? Sonny

This Ivomec is just added to the dog foor (which I do) or squirted into the dog's mouth directly. My just like it on the food.

The diabetic syringe is available a the local Walmart, where I get mine.

I administer it on the 10th of each month. I also give them a "pearl" on my finger every other month for round worms. This is the "Strongid horse wormer" and will last you a life time if you keep the end on it. I use it for all of my dogs, puppies and adults.

We've used Ivomec for about 15 years with good results. As mentioned the heart worm risk is the greatest concern. We've always used the feeder pig formulation which is 1cc per 20 lbs. body weight. That makes it a little easier to measure. The cattle formulation is more concentrated and ends up expiring before it's used up.
We use it orally on the dogs. For many years we ran a fox farm and used it on 200-300 silver fox. We injected it between the shoulder blades subcutaneously. We had good results with it but the stuff really burns when injected so I'd never inject a dog.

If you are using the 1/10 cc per 10lbs I'd quit at conception. You can actually cut that dosage down to 1/100cc of the 1.87% cattle solution and still get adequate coverage for heartworm prevention.

Personally I'd say that if you are in an area where heartworms are a real problem get off of this completely and use interceptor or something else during the pregnancy. I go right back to using it though as soon as they whelp. CR
