Stale Water (Bacteria poisioned)

Could heavily infested algea pond water possibly harm/kill your dog? I have a pup that drunk some algea fested water and now has bad diahrea and dark blood in stool. He also lost a lot of weight within a week. Took him to vet but doc said dog might not make it.

Yes..Here is hoping for the best. I generally pop my dog a Flagyl after swimming in ucky water..Not sure it would stop something like this....

Bloody stool is a Parvo symtom but don't know if the water has any thing to do with.
Blastomycosis is carried in stagnant water and earth you are in a hot spot for this.

Yes sorry to hear. Blue/Green Algae if that is what was ingested is very harmful.

Blue /green algae does kill. Shuts down the kidneys.I'm very sorry to hear about your dog.

A dog's stomach and digestive system is pretty strong Paul...It just might work it out.

It is the blue/green algea..So far he hasn't eaten any thing.

Thanks Ezzy....Sure was because I had great plans for him..I haven't seen a young pup like him run the country like he had, and picked up on the traing as quickly..I took him to Montana and watched him run the prairie from one county to the next, while attacking its covers, and then posing until I flushed the birds for him..At age 7 months old, he surely awed me and a few trainers.

This is terribly sad! Don't beat yourself up for letting him drink the pond water though. Blue-green algae, when it kills, is almost instant (10-30 minutes after ingestion), in lower amounts i've read it can make them sick but not fatally so in most cases. It was likely something else, either way I send my condolences your way.

Very sorry to hear that. My thoughts are with you.

I hope that this can be educational for others. I have no idea what blue/geen alge looks like or what paet or parts of the country you find it. I know that with as much water training as we do in NAVHDA I get worried if water doesnt look right. We trained at a pond this summer that when ever you moved the water with the kayak paddle the water turned red!
I am sure I looked like a sissy to others, but to me mother nature makes things red for a reason. I didnt work my dogs that day just cuz I worry about things. But it must have been ok.

My point is, maybe we can help others identify what and where this stuff grows.

Again, I am truly sorry for the loss of you pup.

In light of this horrible tragedy....are there any people out there that have photos of what this killer looks like? Is there any emergency treatments that can be administered immediately if there is a question of contact or ingestion?

As it is a toxin I don't know if getting a dog to throw up when you notice him shaky would help or not.

It blew my mind! I thought I could just read and look at pictures of the stuff and stay away. But according to what was posted, you may or may not see the blue-green alge depending on what level it is at in the pond! Also, it comes in diffrent colors! So, you wont always know what you are dealing with even if you try to educate yourself!

Bird dog I am sorry for your loss, but hopefully this will help some of us.

SO sorry to hear that he has passed away

some things are just out of our hands..our dogs come across ALL KINDS of things in a field..not to long ago a lady i know from the dog park lost both of her dogs to poison while running them in a field..they came back with parts of a deer carcuss and began seizures right away on the way home in the car, she rushed them to the ER vet and sure enough it was poison..someone, maybe the land owner who knows baited i would imagine for coyotes not thinkin about dogs getting it and the results were 2 dogs dying...we all need to be aware of dangers so thanks for posting this to help raise awareness....ruth

Thank you everyone, for all your supports and concerns. Here are my notes/observations:
Day 1-Aug 28: Axe was ran on hot day and found drinking out of a pond with bluish-green pond.
Day 2-Aug 29: Axe has bad diahea. Hacking or coughing badly. Ate very little food. Found him seizing, and noticed heavy foaming from mouth. Took him to vet.
Blood work done. Advised vet what Axe had possibly injested. Antibiotic administered.
Day 3-Aug 30: Axe continues to have bad diahrea. He is not eating. Forced fed and watered.
Day 4-Aug 31: Antibiotic administered. Forced fed with soft dog food and watered. He throw up and was later forced fed, again. Heavy diahrea continues.
Day 5-Sep 1: Axe looking emicated. Forced fed him 3 times a day. Stool has not change (Dark and runny). Found Axe @ 3pm seizing. Took him to vet and
blood work completed. Vet said Neurotoxins and Cytotoxins found in blood work. Vet said Axe's organs are damaged.
Day 6-Sep 2: Axe was found dead in his kennel. Appeared to have explosive diahrea.

Please be aware of what your dog injest. I understand we can't control what our dogs eat or drink in the field but I hope we can all learn from one another's experience/s. Again, thank you for all the concerns and supports.

this info and timeline is nice of you to share and i bet will help one of us the next time we see signs like you did..what i dont get is why the vet wouldnt have immediately administered an I.V and kept him at the clinic for observation after you telling him day 2 what he may have ingested and that he had been seizing??..did the vet say why he was sending him home for you to have to force feed instead of just giving him an I.V, i only ask cause i went to school as a vet tech and worked in a vet hosp for a while and in severe cases we admitted them into the hospital..not trying to pry just trying to understand, thanks..ruth

Sorry to hear about that. Out here in Oregoin we have state installed guzzlers for birds. The rain water runs off the roof into the concret pan underneath. Lays around to long and gets warn and next thing you know it gets algee, death for dogs. Some of them have field fencing around them th keep prediotrs from mbothering the birds at the things. That does keep the dpgs out.

So sorry to hear about your loss.

Something else to think about, a friend's dear pup contracted some kind of weird skin infection from a similiar situation. Running him along ditches, after pheasants, in the Imperial Valley his pup got some kind of weird skin infection on its paw. Was a flesh eating variety. Poor pup was down for quite a while and many expensive vet trips.

Dog is now ok but keeping your dog off his paws is quite a challenge! Be careful about where you let your pup run.
