Penny the Beagle

Post by Brent.95 » Tue Feb 02, 2016 12:10 pm

I am new to this site and to hunting over a dog of any kind. I have a two year old beagle who loves to track. I let her chase rabbit trails if i know where one has been recently. Is this a good idea to get started? Also, do you think it is too late to start with her? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Getting them on a hot scent is a good start. Eventually she will be able to pick up a cold scent and work it to the rabbit. Just make sure you get in tune with her chopping. You should know the difference if she is running a cold scent, hot scent or a different animal. Trash break of she starts running deer etc....

I ran beagles for 12 years until i recently got my gsp. It is good idea to have some emergency brakes on the dog. Like an ecollar. Beagles brains turn off on good track. You dont want her runnin into a dangerous situation.
