Re: Feeding Rules of Thumb?
My experience with GSP's is that young dogs under two years always look skinny. Seeing three ribs is OK. Slowly feed just a little more every day and check weight monthly. I stop by my Vets once a month just to weight my dogs. It is not uncommon for them to loose weight during the 4 months we hunt. ...

Re: post hunt effects on dogs
A good dog could run itself into the ground.
You need to control that or do what I did; I got a second dog and run one every other day.
I also give them Annamaet Glycocharge right after each hunt to help restore their glycogen. BTW my GSP's love the stuff.

I suggest when feeding kibble to flood the kibble with water. Always have lots of water. I like to use 5 gal. buckets. Two cups? I don't think so. I have a female GSP that likes to stand with her two front legs in a 5 gal bucket when her is hot. She also likes to drink with her eyes below water line...

Hunting ruffed grouse is great fun. I started hunting them with my BIG RUNNING GSP's last year. I was amazed at how they tighten up on the thick aspens. Yep they point, flush and retrieve ruffs. Some times the big boy will spot one up in a tree and stand there and bark. Fun stuff. Hitting one on the...

The commands words might vary depending on the type of dog; Pointer? Flushing?
HOWEVER the three most important ones are: WHOA! WHOA! and WHOA!
Silly maybe, but it amazes me how many times I've I have said that with a response; "yes I know that" but their dog does not!

You are heading in the right direction and have the correct dog. Some dogs can blow out their paws/pads in an hour over on the Snake/Brownlee. Early season will have rattle snakes. IMO: 1.) If you know better than the dog does, as to where the wild birds are, then you want a close ranging dog that goes where you want to go. 2.) If you want to find more wild birds, then the guy in number one above, you want a big ranging dog. Then turn it loose and let it hunt, keep your mount ...
