Re: New - to everything
How long have you had Mac? The tear off in the yard should subside once he bonds a little more with you. I would assume he doesn't know what heel means. Work him in the hallway on the leash for a while until it is proven, then overlay the e-collar with that if you wish. Transition out to the yard. A...

Re: Teaching to retrieve
Put him on a checkcord or lead in your hallway and toss a pheasant wing or bumper or anything that they are interested in. Once it is in their mouth call 'here' or 'come' and a tug on the lead. Do this for 1 day to 1 month however long it takes to bring it to you once it is in their maw. Once that i...

Re: How does one know your pup is ready for his first hunt ?
Bumpers, dummies with or without feathers pup retrieves but not the fresh bird ! I would make sure the dog is reliable with all commands in the yard first. Your progression in retrieving bumpers then dummies then with feathers, work up to frozen birds, cold birds and fresh birds with the blank gun....

Re: Keeping birds for training questions
Dogs can't catch pigeons and the birds that fly hard do a good job of preventing a dog from running in and catching birds. Should you put a dog that you are training on poor flying pen birds the dog will probably catch them and attempt that in the future. Pigeons prevent that. Your pen is perfect fo...

Re: Reel Him In???
As far as I can assume you are correct in saying you give "light" tugs to puppies. I would be a little forceful with him with a stronger "check" at the end of your cord when you demand compliance. Once he turns tell him to "come" only once, when he stops or turns to go the other way check him again ...

Re: Pigeon Question
Roller pigeons can be kept in a kit box and moved. I have never trained dogs with them. I have re-homed young birds (homers) less than 1 year old that have flown at different lofts . What I did was keep them in a location with a flight pen so they can see for a few weeks on the trap so they can come...

Re: how often to train?
With my 10 month old pointer we generally do something everyday for 30min or 1hour if we are just handling. I whoa train when coming/going to the crate, whoa going outside and inside (stops bolting), and whoa before feeding. Although I run the fields for handling and throw a couple recalls in there ...
