Re: Pointer question (no familiararity with breed)
You're reaching a little further with every post. If the poster had wanted information on setters, he'd likely have asked for it. You present yourself as an expert on pointers and their retrieving ability (or inability), then it comes out that your expertise is based on the fact that your setters wo...

Re: Pointer question (no familiararity with breed)
I believed he asked about pointers, not setters. If you refer to your book, you'll learn that they are two different breeds. I found it interesting that your bible of dogdom describes the pointer as "standing motionless when he spots his game", then goes on in the next sentence to claim that they ar...

Re: Pointer question (no familiararity with breed)
I have two pointers, of completely separate bloodlines, and they both retrieve every bit as well than the Weims and wire that I owned previously. As a matter of fact, both were much quicker to pick up water retrieves than the other breeds. I've not asked them to pick up fur, so I can't say that they...

Re: Regarding HSUS and pheasant stocking
Cajun, you've insinuated repeatedly that our state releases birds, when that simply isn't the case. The city of Aberdeen releases a few tagged birds to help fill more local motel rooms, but that hardly constitutes a release program by the State of South Dakota. Yes, the commercial preserves release ...

Re: Regarding HSUS and pheasant stocking
The South Dakota Game, Fish, & Parks doesn't release any birds. Seems like I'm constantly reading that on forums, but it's never been the case. While it's true that some of the larger pay-to-hunt operations release birds, the state doesn't. If you shoot South Dakota ringnecks anywhere other than com...

A few years ago, I just drew a shorthair's outline on a piece of plywood and cut it out. I painted both sides, one dark roan, the other a patched white, and put handles on both sides so that we could pop it up from either side. My nine-year-old daughter would lay in fields with the silhouette (with ...

I agree with Garrison. I've always had good luck with the tried-and-true method of putting the pup's crate behind me in a hallway, and tossing a rolled-up sock in the opposite direction. Most pups will chase the thrown sock down, pick it up, and then attempt to return to their crate with it. I inter...

Check out Scott Beynon in Freeman, an hour SW of Sioux Falls. He takes just 3-4 dogs per year and does a nice job with them. In South Dakota, flushers/ retrievers outnumber pointers twenty to one. I've never understood why; could be that people perceive the training for a flusher to be easier? I'll admit that there are some conditions for which they are probably better suited than pointers, such as creek bottoms, sloughs,...

In the mud room on dog beds. They get a fair amount of interaction with the family there, and stay warm / cool depending on the season, but are never allowed any further in. Too much shedding to be in the house, much less our bed, as we'd have white pointer hair all over everything.

I don't doubt there is some merit to what Larue shared, but I'd hate for new handlers to avoid NAVHDA for fear that it will take all the run out of their dog. As Ruff and Ray mentioned, most of that is determined by the dog's genetics and training. As some of you know, I ran an AA-bred pointer thoug...

I've been involved in NAVHDA for eight years or so, and NSTRA for the past two. BillT; You're insinuating that the dogs not finishing the trial dropped out due to exhaustion, which is not the case. Get there early enough to watch as many braces as possible. You'll learn a lot in the process, and my guess is that you'll also encounter some veterans who will be more than happy to give you advice. Your first trial will be about getting a feel for the game, and having a good time.

Looks to me like JKP has a pretty good handle on this one.
