Re: WH pointing griffon vs. French Brittney
The Setter is not really a versatile breed. They are upland bird finders. Great speed and grace, superb temperment when not hunting. Shedding nightmare in the house, I own one. A setter will retrieve a duck but that's really not what they're made for. Kinda like driving your corvette in the mud race...

An auto is great when it works. It sucks when it doesn't. I've shot a bunch through an auto, but I'm a pretty fair 1100 mechanic. For a first gun, to get a handle on everything, you can't go wrong with an 870. One thing to think about is that some synthetic stocks cannot be cut off to fit you shoul...

I know and hunt with a few guys who have them. The thing to keep in mind is that they are a retriever, a lab. They will never perform like a pointing breed in the uplands. Nothing wrong with a good meat dog for the hunters. When I was little, growing up on a farm and hunting by myself, my dad had a GSP and a sable collie. Believe it or not, the collie was a better hunting dog for me.

A golden that is not active daily (housedog) is going to heat up in a hurry. Watch him and when he starts to labor a bit, get him in the shade and get him some water. Like Greg said, their condition has much to do with how hard you can work them.

I'd try to shoot one of the 20's you are looking at if you are serious about buying one. A healthy percentage of hunters don't shoot light, short guns very well. If you are an upland hunter, a 12 ga Montefeltro on the used rack is affordable, light and easy shooting, they're not too great if you use...

I love Draat's and their tenacity, prey drive is remarkable. That's what makes them special. But. . . that also is why I wouldn't get one if I were going to be having a baby or two down the road. Too much potential for disaster there. Other breeds would be more appropriate.
