He lives in the really cold part, where blizzards of biblical proportion are not uncommon, the temps rarely rise above ten below, the cattails are razor-sharp, and no pointer could hope to survive even a single day in the kennel.

Those negative temps are typically at night, when the dogs are tucked away in insulated kennels or in the house. I've hunted my pointer for full days at temps just above zero, and he did just fine. If it's any colder than that, heck with it, I'm staying home.

Getting there early is a must, but keep in mind that not everyone abides by simple hunter's etiquette, and some jerk might pull up behind you with five minutes to go, unload his dog, and jump into your field. Check the GF&P site and get a copy of walk-in ground. My guess is that you and your dogs will get plenty of bird encounters. If you hit a dry spell on public ground, you can ask around for a landowner who charges a daily access fee.

You must have some deep-seated insecurities that motivate you to unload on pointers at every opportunity. You have a long and colorful history of doing so.
Hunt behind whatever breed you prefer to hunt behind, and enjoy it. Then allow others to do the same. The leg-hiking has become a bit stale.

Nobody claimed that pointers were great cold weather waterfowl dogs. The thin coat obviously disqualifies them from that, just as a wire's coat can be a liability in warmer weather.
