Re: Hold on first Scent?

it sounds like you need to start whoa breaking or teaching him not to chase. I think you have the best situation, your dog points at first scent it sounds like. know you just have to teach the obedience to hold point and some of that will come with age. But you need to find a way to correct him when...

Maybe let her catch and play with a few quail to get her really excited about birds. I say quail b/c they are smaller and would pose less of chance to scare her. After she starts to get really excited about birds then you could return to the launchers. To help with the pointing instinct, watch her b...

I think the bird is the whoa command, if that makes since. Start with a lot of stop to flush work, teaching the dog every time the bird is in the air he stops. from that point on you can start making the corrections when a bird flies off during a pointing drill. You can add the whoa command toward t...

How much waterfowl do you plan on doing? If a lot, you may want to look at some of the "Versatile Breeds". I think you can get a Setter to do the retrieves, but if WF is a big part of your hunting you may want to get something a little more accustomed to that kind of hunting.

don, at 6 mos, I would think this dog is past the chasing stage and you can work on the dog not chasing. that is my reasoning for cc the dog to the launcher. I agree if the dog starts to smell it, and you can tell that by knowing your dog, then you should pop the bird. He doesn't necessarily have to...

I wouldn't let the dog get any closer to the trap than were it points. So, cc him towards the launcher, when he points, let slack go in the cc. When the dog starts to break point, pop the bird and restrain the dog from chasing with the cc. It is a bad situation to let a young dog get real close to a...

Re: planting birds for puppy (need to reuse birds)

i think it depends on where you are in training. You want the dog to see the bird fly away, for the most part, if it is teathered to the pvc then it never sees that. the pvc is for later when a dog is very close to broke and you want to really tempt him by keeping the bird there. I think the cardboa...
