Annoying Dog!

I have to admit it, I have that dog that wants to play with his brace mate. It has happened 2 out of the 3 JH that we have ran in. The first time judges were very forgiving. The second test he did not want to play and I thought the problem was over. But today it cost us. He was DQ, before we really ...

Where did you get your pup? I would start with asking them, assuming that you have a relationship with your breeder. The other question that I would ask, is how much research did you do on your breeder?

i am with powderski, I would choose a Bernese Mountain Dog. My wife and I were visiting breeders for them when we lived in Wyoming, climate was perfect for them there. Not quite the same in Va. Everyone that I have met has be unbelievable friendly, I love large dogs and their faces are so expressive...

I have met a few people from the club, and actually going to be helping with the field trial. I agree that the people that we have met so far are nice. C.F. Phelps is a VA wild life management area, you can look it up on their website. Also, there are a number of wild quail on the property. I have n...

The wires are also a little bit larger than the smooth coats. I do not know if that is normal for other breeds, wire to smooth relationship. There are also a couple of breeders in the Atlanta Ga area, if interested.

Jonesy, He does fine in that situation, bringing bird back to hand. But I can not always be in that situation so I use what I have available to me. Could you suggest an alternative to the bumper, that you feel would be better? He is not gun shy. He really likes the shot and gets excited when he here...

Tailcrackin' I say that he naturally retrieves, but from what I understand at some point that will give. And if you have ff then the dog will always go on the retrieve for you. Plus, for the past week or two he has starting playing with his bumper instead of bringing it back. I have read a couple of...

I was worried about using the ecollar now. I didn't know if he was to young or not for that.

So, you feel as though I can whoa break him now? It is not to early to do that?

I have read some training books. I have finished my 3rd book (Jack Sharkey, Delmar Smith and the 3rd escapes me at the moment), the first of which was finished before I bought the dog. I have also watched several videos on start to finish. I joined this forum and I am pretty much obsessed with readi...

Tru Blu, He is not afraid of a starter pistol or a shotgun, it actually excites him. I did take him hunting one time on wild grouse. He ran to close to them and flushed them, he did stop at that point. That was his first time on wild birds, he has been on pen raised stuff before that. I have not che...

Where to Next?

Keep in mind that I am a first time bird dog owner. I have a 10 mos. old puppy and I am not for sure where or what to do next. Here is what we have worked on: He will come when called, unless he is really worked up. He will heel in the field to cast him out again, walks well on the leash. He does li...

I have hunted beagles in as thick as cover gets and never had a problem with the tails. I also know a breeder who hunts his dogs 4-5 times a week during the heavy part of the season with no problems. Ted, I have never experienced the situation that you mentioned. I have owned beagles all of my life ...

No Problems Yet!

I have an import from Hungary. They no longer crop tails there for Vizsla's, I believe that it is illegal for any dog to have a cropped tail or ears. However, he does have his dew claws removed. He is only 9 mos. old, we have been in the field and training a fair amount and there have been no issues...

Hunters or Not?

I have recently joined the gun dog forum and I am new to the whole gun/bird dog experience. I joined a couple of clubs to meet people who are around bird dogs and training. Some people that I have been around have really pushed the AKC test, NAVDHA and even NSTRA trials. My question is: do more peop...

I feed my dog Orijen, it is a company out of Canada. They are grain free food, which from what I have read is suppose to be good for dogs. Has anyone else heard of this product or use it? My dog seems to enjoy it.

Does anyone have an opinion on the G3 line from Tri Tronics? I have been trying to decide between the 90 G2 EXP and the G3 Sport Combo? This is my first e collar as well, looking for ease of use and expandable. Thanks for the advice.

Brad, When you used the bird release, what exactly are you trying to accomplish? It appeared in the video that the dog had no idea what was going on. He stopped because he saw the bird fly, but the whole idea is that we want them to stop before the bird fly's. I don't understand what you are doing, ...

It is a little late for this coming weekend. We have plans to be in Maryland at a club event, it is not a hunt test, but a chance to get on birds in a training situation with other dogs. There might be a chance that we come to the one in Jan. We would rather finish sooner rather than later. thanks f...

I did not want to be one of those handlers that just let their dog go nuts. He is a puppy (9 mos.). But I still did not want to take away from the other dogs run. Routine

I just recently completed my first JH for the dog and the owner and the one thing that I came away with is to keep your training routine on the test day. The first day we did nothing similar to the way we trained. I kept in a kennel all day, fed him and walked him like we were on a stroll through ou...
