he doesn't point it b/c he knows that he is going to catch it. It, being the pheasant dummy. I am willing to bet if it were a real bird that you would see some more pointing instinct, especially if he did not catch the birds a time or two in a row. A lot of things play into it. 1)Travel and expenses. 2)Don't have a horse, which there are walking stakes, but moving out west there are fewer of them. 3)Who do you trial w/ AKC/AF or do you want to play in the other games. 4)would just rather spend my time hunting or training my dogs. 5)the time th...

bird intro with a pen raised bird of some kind, probably not pheasant. But something they can get there mouth on and catch after a short chase. then go to wild birds for 4-5 times to let him bump and chase, will not be able to crowd birds and will never catch them. Bruce is a great guy and I do not think you will go wrong with getting a dog from him. But if you are primarily a waterfowl guy, some other breeds might be a little better for you. GWP's, DD's, Chesapeake's or even a lab. Not saying a GSP will not do the job, they will and they will do a fine job. I...

how much is a well bred dog is a very loaded question. you can get a whole host of answers on that one. I would start with trying to find a breeder that is close to you that is willing to work with you on training the dog and learning how to train a dog. That is a very big part of what you are going...

In point of fact, I am much more likely to encourage the dog, especially a young dog that is unsure or an older dog that is sticky... to continue to search for the bird rather than to lock up when it is not sure. It is far, far better, in my opinion, for a dog that is a little unsure, to bust a bir...

One thing about the "whoa" command is that it should never be used to establish a point. Which is what I think that you were alluding to in your original post. The dog should establish point on its own, you should not "whoa" it into a point. Some of this can get a bit tricky, especially depending on...

you have to be in control of the situation, do not let the dog run free during the training session. Have it on a check cord and work the dog on the traps. one of the hardest things to handle is to have another dog go in and rip out a bird in front of your dog.
Training Scenario:
your dog has established point and holding, let an untrained dog, could be any kind of dog (family pet), just run in front of your dog and flush the bird.
