Hi Tom and Brenda: Thank you both for the advice. I appreciate it very much. Here is how I have it boiled down in my head...please correct me if I'm wrong: 1. The central strategy is to maximize your dog's opportunity to find the most birds. 2. Ground coverage is an important part of that...thus div...

NSTRA Handling Advice

All, I normally run AKC hunt tests. I'm helping a friend here put on a NSTRA trial March 19, so I figured I would enter. At the two trials I've been to, I've figured out that I have a lot to learn about managing the field, playing the wind, etc. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to post or ...

Oh, yes! Think about what happens in 12 gauge when you go from a milque-toast 1 oz load to a nice 1-1/4 heavy field load. -- As an aside, I was helping a guy Sunday a week ago. I'd been shooting 1 oz 8-1/2's Super-Lite AA's through a skeet choke in my own shotgun. The guy handed me his shotgun to sh...

Decoy, Try this some time with 5... 28 ga shooters...I have won O/100 and didn't shoot a box of shells... Some days when the wind is strong, we would have to move up until someone breaks a target.I have found that the #5 shot carries better but fewer pellets and in 3/4 oz hand loads. Shooting whole...

American skeet favors O/U's that are heavier, more weight-forward and stocked longer and higher than what is ideal for a field gun. The skeet field is a good place to try out a shotgun, but remember to practice mounting the shotgun and keep in mind that you might have on very different clothing whil...

Hey,

I'm not an expert, but when I had a similar situation, some folks here advised to let my dog retrieve out of the back.

That, in conjunction with using a remote launcher, seems to be slowly curing the problem.

You have two basic routes: new and used. If you want a new o/u, look at the various imports from Eastern Europe. There are so many snow geese down in the rice fields that they are pests. 105 geese in a weekend by a professional guide service is less than a spit over Niagara Falls.

Getting back on topic, I wouldn't use a Weim for retrieving in cold water. They don't have the coat for it.

We trim our GSP's and V's nails once a week.

I trim them off with a scissors type nail trimmer, then I round them off with a sandpaper wheel on my Dremel.

Trim a little each time. As you trim, the quick in their nail will recede.

In general, they are particularly soft and prone to sitting when pressured to staunch up.

Bobby Seelye, who is a pro trainer, field trialer of V's, jokes "Don't teach a V to 'S' 'I' 'T'" (spelling it so he doesn't even say it).
