Re: Releasing Quail
Releasing pen raised birds doesn't work as a sole plan. It really doesn't matter if they are pheasant, quail, chuckars etc. You have to have the cover and feed to coincide with the release, If it worked as well as people would hope then I should have THOUSANDS of birds around my place with hundreds ...

Shoot Him........... lol Seriously I have had dogs for years and only medicated them with Ivermectrin for heartworms. This has kept the fleas and ticks off at a good rate. Remember that nothing works 100%. Also get rid of any bedding that may harbor the pest. (I mean the fleas, not the dogs  )

True Rinker, I dabble in HB, and AA but mostly run walking stakes. This is because that is the dogs I have, and they are best suited for that venue. Weekend stakes can be expensive but are still the least expensive stakes to participate in.

Easy way around this is to not put the dog down when dad is hunting. Then he can shoot whatever he wants.

$5-700 a month for training. Entry fees, travel fees, handling fees, etc. You can spend 2,000 a month easy depending on what trials you want your dog to attend.

Good feed, I switch to it in the summer months after feeding Extreme Athlete through the fall and winter. Listen to Ezzy though cause you can get the rankest gas ever by feeding to much. Sure makes it easy to ration the portions though, if you dog stinks then tone it down.

When we aren't feeding cantaloupe and watermelon rinds to the do quail and hogs we usually send them out to the dogs. Doesn't hurt them a bit, they love them, and keeps them from rotting in the trash cans.

Fly your young birds for a week and leave the bobs down with the house you want them out of. Keep them open in the other You are going to have to restrict the older birds for awhile.

I raise birds and half a half dozen of these sitting around the pens. When you raise birds you will always have some that get loose. They work awesome for me and for the price of the wire, since I make them myself, they are a great investment.

Re: Where to keep your birds for training?
Keeping a loft in a tree line can cause problems, i.e. predator access (especially makes a great roost for hawks to hunt your birds when released) and will cause problems for your birds upon return to the loft. Like Ezzy said keeping the birds close to the kennels wont make a difference. Mine flight...

Sling, and I still get it shouldered faster than all my buddies that dont use one. Really doesnt matter much though since we only shoot birds that are pointed so the sling is in use "between" birds.

Ok there is a difference between bumped birds for the entire season and shooting a few for a young dog. Shooting a few at the correct times for a young dog can be of great benefit.
