Re: Spaying

Doc, I sure wish I could find a local vet with that attitude. What I have gotten is the full court press to snip my dogs bits, with zero discussion of risks. After my last dog died of hemangiosarcoma and I started reading about it (its a death sentence and many times more common in spayed females), ...

Re: Arizona quail

I watch the show on youtube (no cable) and just recently saw the new drone shots. Really awesome!!!! I have hunted wild birds without so much as a flush many times. Wouldnt make much of a TV show, so I get why the preserve hunts happen. Just pointing out that the demand is there for wild bird shows ...

Re: Vizsla or Pointing Lab?

When you start talking about how well a dog handles cold/snow I think it makes sense to specify. Of the dogs Ive owned my pointer had the thinest coat, and she wasnt particularly tough as hunting dogs go. Never had any problems hunting her until it was down to around 15 deg. She hunted fine but fros...

Re: Arizona quail

You mean people who own magazines want to publish articles that people might actually like to read? Like suggesting new places to hunt? Maybe even on public land? And other people demean their family name by accepting payment for such "work" as writing those articles? Have we really reached such a s...

Force Fetch - next steps after the yard

I started a force fetch program with my 2yo Setter in January. Prior to starting this he had very little interest in retrieving anything even if he was chasing something thrown for him - he would usually mouth the bumper and play with it, but not even carry it. My first go at ff, and there was some ...

Re: Male English setter breeding

Stone Elvis, out of Terhaars Elvis x Call Me Kate. I seem to remember the papers showing someone in Oak Park or something like that. If she is from Swift Rock that would be pretty funny! I went to look at Bryans dogs in July, but the pointer I wanted didn't impress me. He had a nice male setter that...

Re: Male English setter breeding

Hopefully you won't consider it a thread hijack, but do you have any information on your dog's breeder? I just purchased a 1 1/2 year old setter in August. When I got the pedigree it showed Lora Long Gone Nixon as the dam, same as your dog. He seems to have been cast off by someone as the hunt club ...

Re: Kansas lodge for pheasant and quail?

Short day Wednesday. Hunted 2 hours early on 160 ac. with a couple of creek bottoms. Dog pushed a pheasant out of a thicket. Got lucky with the direction and put the bird down hard. Broke my rule for the trip of shooting pointed birds. No idea whether Ace pointed in that thicket or not. Called it at...

Re: Kansas lodge for pheasant and quail?

I'm here at Irish Creek Lodge. Steve has a nice place. Comfortable, clean, and a very reasonable price. Spent a little time on his controlled shooting area in the AM. Went out onto some of his outlying properties in PM. Saw four coveys, and four pheasants on the wild bird properties. Way to hot. 64 ...

Re: The Ducks Unlimited Disgrace

DU has essentially taken the position that wealthy donors matter more than the outdoor recreationists they purport to represent. Well that's sad, but I can't say I'm surprised, and I doubt the author was surprised either unless he was very naïve. My guess is the executives at DU care more about the...

Re: Kansas lodge for pheasant and quail?

Ouch. Doesn't sound too good.

My trip is already booked. Hopefully the lodge has some private land with decent bird numbers.

Not the first time I've read WIHA's are a waste of a trip unfortunately.

I use tinypic.com Upload the photo and then use "best for website" sizing, etc. tinypic.com hosts the image, and you copy and paste the "IMG code for forums" that tinypic puts up once the image is uploaded like this: http://i68.tinypic.com/312uzph.png Pretty easy to do once you get the hang of it.

Re: Bloodlines verses Environment?

One time when I was very young, stupid and dogless I "stole" my buddy's Brittany. He intended to hunt the dog but never did. I felt sorry for the thing because it was crated 10 hours a day, and never got ran, much less on birds. Didn't see a bird all day and figured the poor dog was worthless. Walki...

Re: Kansas lodge for pheasant and quail?

A group of us just booked a 1/2 day hunt in El dorado. We plan on hunting public land with my dog near rush and russell counties after that. We're headed up the second to last weekend of November. Remind me, and when I get back I'll give you a report on the public land up there. That would be great...

Re: Kansas lodge for pheasant and quail?

Don't waste your money. Get a walk in atlas drive and hunt the fields, you will kill your limit of pheasants each day and have an opportunity at quail on the correct sites. I certainly considered just this, but I figured for as little vacation as I get it was worth it to up my odds on private land....

Re: Relocating or going in on the flush

Hammering is too strong a word, you're right. I really have not been putting on any serious pressure at all around birds, so I just meant step up pressure. I like his style and don't want to see him let down because I screwed up applying too much pressure. You are correct that I'm giving a command t...

Relocating or going in on the flush

1.5 years ES. Purchased as started dog in August. I have worked him a fair amount on whoa, and he knows what it means enough to whoa in the house (off leash say if I drop a treat and whoa him) or out in the yard (on leash). But not away from me in the field. Still seems rather "puppy-ish" to me. I'v...

Hello All, I have a .22 pistol with blanks I plan on introducing this weekend. Any advice on how it should be done? I planned on letting her get into "hunt mode" out in CRP and then having my brother stand next to her 30 yds away while I throw up a dummy and shoot. I'm not nearly as experienced as ...

Not a bad idea! I removed some before, threw them over the fence onto the driveway on a calm day. There was a patch of white spores on the driveway later that day.

getting rid of mushrooms

Had a bit of a scare with the new pup on Wednesday. When I woke up and let him out in the yard I looked out to see him messing with a small group of mushrooms. I called him off, and as he was trotting to the door he reached down and snatched one off the ground. I was able to grab him and force his m...

Re: Kansas lodge for pheasant and quail?

Hey guys, since I haven't been able to get any personal recommendations I went ahead and guessed as best I could. According to the KDWPT it looked like the areas around Pratt and Edwards Counties in the central area of the state might be good for both pheasant and quail numbers. I didn't have much l...

Kansas lodge for pheasant and quail?

Thinking I may try to do a couple day trip this year with the new dog. I was also thinking it would be cool to go somewhere that offers a mixed bag of pheasant and quail, wild birds in numbers to have a fair chance at 2 or 3 roosters a day along with a couple conveys. Willing to pay a fair price, bu...

Hi all. My name is John and I'm from the rural burbs outside of Chicago. Currently working with my 4th pointing dog. This time around I picked up a little runt setter with a lot of energy. He's a year and a half old, and has had some formal training, but needs to be finished. My last dog that I rece...
