Now I'm bringing up an old thread. :) because my dog passed over today......(9 years old with cancer) . I've had 9 dogs in my lifetime and had to put 8 down ( one was stolen), but it is never easier as you know. This thread really encouraged me. Because of Parkinson's Disease , this dog was my last ...

Exactly.
It is all about repetition and a consistent response, which is why I tell folks that when you call the pup and it doesn't come, get up and get him/her every time.

Don't shoot your dog. I'm serious. Brand new hunters shooting over their dog are often so rev'd up that they can shoot their jumping up dog. Almost did it myself with a beagle chasing a rabbit.

Well said Willie. In many ways it is a crap shoot picking pups imo . The last litter a friend and I made(well the dogs made :) out of A.F. 4xCH Shady Hills Billy and Uplanders Contessa, had all 7 pups sold before they were born. When a guy came to pick up the last pup he had paid for, only the runt ...

How a pup is at 4 weeks has no bearing on how it'll turn out. Just pick the one you like the looks of best. If there was a way to pick the best that's all there would be I'm certainly willing to admit that you can see some qualities at eight weeks-- or seven. But four weeks? Don't know what the bre...

#3 Throw and shoot with dog chasing the bird. Let dog chase until it is far from the gun initially then keep setting up the same situation until the dog is closer to the gun but NOT too close for a while.

What is hard to believe is no one has ask how he got it done. What was the process that was gone through to get the dog to stand and hold birds till he gets there to flush. It sounds like he had a customer that liked his dog but would be happier if the dog would point and now the dog does. Or how a...

Don't neglect yourself. The BEST thing you can do for that new pup is to buy a tested training program you like, develop a solid training program based on it, and FOLLOW YOUR PLAN. Two puppies? Double the work/training , double the money and they may bond with each other and not with you. Plus speaking as a woman , you risk putting your wife over the edge.

Sounds like you need to take a couple steps backwards in your training...seems like the dog hasn't been trained to do what you want or understand what you expect and the ecollar means nothing in the process. May be a good idea to put the checkcord to use and have another person help you during your...

Very common. Not much you can do except for using sedating meds when you know a storm is coming, or try Gypsy's suggestion. Talk to your vet. Tomorrow is Canada Day here so there will be lots of fireworks here. My dog won't like it either.

When I was 6 or 7, Dad used to carry me on his shoulders if I tired while he ran a line of snares in Nova Scotia. We hunted nearly daily, potting the plentiful grouse out of trees. Lots of grouse in those days. Occasionally we'd get a snowshoe hare. I was addicted from an early age. By 12 I was wor...

Interesting how it was Dad or Grandpa who got most started - and Dad for me too. I started at about 10 with Dad hunting rabbits and me carrying a .22. If I could carry the gun the whole trip without dragging it in the mud, I was allowed to shoot at a target at the end of the day. In those days of co...
