Re: New puppy and kids
At 4 months the breeder should have had him socialized with children, in which he sounds like he wasnt. By the sounds of it your kids may have been his first introduction to these miniature humans and he was just unsure of things. Keep an eye on him, I dont mind growling from a dog especially if the...

Sometimes these things are hard to correct.. sounds like he maybe a little fear aggressive. May want to bring him to a trainer for an evaluation.

The crouching after the bird is shot is the dogs anticipation of getting the bird as the handler retrieves it. Let the birds teach the dog is the best there is. Like your training style!

soak in salt water( Epsom salts) twice a day, EMT gel and try and leave it uncovered as much as possible. Keep dog off it as much as possible. My Gordon has had a few nasty pad cuts over the years and this works the best.

Re: Should a 13 week old GSP be trained well enough to be
At 13 weeks there is no need for CC. In the forest allow the dog to explore and build confidence in it self. keeping your mouth shut is good. Most pups want to come around a see where your at. by CDN_Cocker Pups should get off leash time from the moment you get them. Between 8 and 12 weeks (sometim...

Personal preference I guess. I hunt willow Ptarmigan on the Barrens of Newfoundland( somewhat similar to moors in Ireland) and these birds at times can be pretty wild. Sometimes I think a low profile on a dog may have its advantages. Your Red sure has a nice style! low set and high tail.

The ecoboost f150 is a nice alternative too. The 7.3 powerstroke I have now I'm able to get decent mileage with an edge programmer, cold air intake and straight 4" from the turbo back. The 5.0L Coyote in the new F150 returns pretty close to ecoboost numbers without some of the issues the Eco has be...

Re: Puppy time
The biggest divergence is the 12 o'clock tail over here. Some interesting reads. Craig O. Is the 12 O'clock tail a conditioned trait or does it come out naturally in some setter? I have had setters for 30 years and all mine have had a tradition set, low and 9 o'clock or lower tails naturally( my pr...

I'm looking at getting rid of my truck, a f-250 powerstroke, to get an SUV and get better MPG. Have you considered a newer F150? My mileage in my 5.0 V8 2012 Super Crew has been on par with what we were getting in a Honda CRV we had. Plus tonnes more space. In 35,000km I am averaging 13.3 L/100 ( 1...

Is he from Susan Russel's Kennel? Craig O. Mine is, from her Brophy's Rio Grande x Russel's Kibou litter. Susan is producing some very solid hunting dogs and show dogs, I have hunted over a lot of setters over the last 25+ years and this guy in his first year has been very impressive. Tonnes of dri...

Some great setups! I think I am going to invest in a truck cap and build a slide out drawer system for the truck bed. Leave the kennels in the back as now Im loading and unloading them everytime I take the dogs out. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/ivanyjason/67047_10151681172256044_1924510962_...

Re: Kennel training
Only kennel training I have ever had to do is cover with a blanket and feed the dog every meal in the kennel. When I put food in the kennel I give the command "load up" Is the dog "here" trained? if so open the door and give the command and he should come. If not there is a reason he has been condit...

Re: Crate Training: When will it end!
It's worth a try. We always feed in crates, and I think it helps reinforce that the crate is a good place to be. Yep, I had my new Irish shipped across country and he hated the crate for the first few days here, even though the breeder had them use to crates. A day or two if feeding him in there an...

My gordon setter has had the same thing every summer for 5-6 years, skin on belly gets dry, flaky and the hair really thins out. Never bad in the winter but from late spring/early summer it would get bad. In the last 2 years she hasnt had it at all, only thing changed was her food. She has always be...

skinned out nose ran into a rock- advice
Ok so now I remember what its like to have a 5 month old setter. Coordination hasnt caught up with the growth spurt. Little guy was out running around a field chasing robins and just being a retard when he ran into a big rock in some tall grass. Seen him walking away with his head down and I knew he...

For the first years of my hunting days I shot willow Ptarmigan with a old single shot Topper 12 gauge. Come to think about it I knocked down more birds then than I do now sometimes. When you have one shot you have to make it count LOL

She recently new a bitch to a Brophy dog out of California. I'm excited to see these puppies develop. Thanks for sharing p...
