Re: Training a Jack Russell Terrier Rabbit Dog

This Tractive looks very nice and affordable! Is it that rugged compared to a Garmin or Sport Dog? I'm surprised their GPS e-collars are so expensive compared to the Tractive models. The fee is low because you pay a monthly subscription fee , rather than a one time purchase amount. The location/map...

Exactly. which is why in my post I recommended safety steps until the dog gets help that might help. I've had many rescued dogs , not socialized nor properly cared for in their early years. Some things can't be fixed. 3 became fine pets for us using the safety measures mentioned. One after my best e...

Appreciate all the advice. The problem for me is that many of the suggestions are not available in Canada ; to order from the USA doubles the price with money exchanges and shipping. I have to get it from my vet. It's a work in progress. :)

Re: Training a Jack Russell Terrier Rabbit Dog

Thank you guys for the help, this is all very useful! I suspect the real emphasis on this will be recall on the whistle and tracking. Now, you mention a GPS collar, I will seriously consider one. Do you recommend a particular make and model? Should I take a shovel with me in case the dog gets stuck...

Interesting reads.

They definitely take down the deer and rabbits. When they moved into and area that I always had good success in, that was the end of the deer and rabbits.

Thanks Garrison. I've had 4 JRTs( old name) and enjoyed every one. When I wasn't old , I participated in JRT trials. ( 50+ yards of an underground trail with a rat in a cage at the end.) What a blast! They are a challenge, but worth the time imo Once they know what you want , they are in to it...

Garrison, what you had is young dogs with no skilled leader. There is no way a smart bitch leading a pack be anywhere near your dog with you in the area. People say, "Socialize pup well and everything will be fine." This has not been my experience for every dog I have had , although socializing is an essential first step. Without year 1 socializing, many of the normal obedience work doesn't help entirely. Every dog is different though. I have had 2 o...

Re: Rescued Boykin- 3-4 year old Male

Training is very bonding for a dog. They love to have a leader to work for and work with. If you train, your dog will get closer to you. Fetch does not have to be a game for a dog,. He does not have to enjoy playing fetch in order to be an excellent gun dog. He can learn that "fetch" is a work thin...

I've had many a rescue . I was glad to hear you say, "This dog will not be under any pressure for a long time." He has to learn to trust you. Even playing with a toy, may make him hesitant if he has been abused/ignored in any way in the past. To encourage you, I rescued a GSP from a pet store years ...
