Re: Living in venomous snake territory
My dog was bitten in mid October, I know of others who have had dogs bitten in January when it was in the 40's. It's very unlikely to happen, but the risk is there. Incidentally, a particularly bad time might be the days after a cold snap. Once the temp rises, snakes can tend to come out to warm the...

Re: Tips for Hunt Tests
Just found this announcement dated 12/7 http://www.akc.org/pdfs/events/hunting_tests/pointing_breeds/PBHT_Advanced_Titles_Intro.pdf Looks like they dropped the part about averaging the other qualifying scores, so all you need is an 8 average to get an advanced leg. And yes, there's more paperwork in...

It's not raising the bar, it's raising more money. Both of my dogs scored 8's on several of their MH test. Why would I want to repeat the process. No thanks, I'll stick with the MH and NAVHDA Utility Test/VC. After this debacle I might even drop the AKC Tests and stay with NAVHDA. If I going to spe...

My preferred approach is the knee in the chest method. They jump, lift your knee up so they jump into it. It doesn't have to be hard or violent, just something that is uncomfortable that they won't do by choice. Do that a couple of times and they'll stop jumping on you. X2 on having everybody do it,...

The term "use" is very different than "possession of, or carry" . What are they going to do? Maybe erase a JH pass? Ban the guy? Fire the judge? The AKC rep, Gary Sadler, was also asked about this and he stated the same rule. The response I saw from Gary, forwarded after the fact, was a one word answer of no. Either way, I disagree with him. Hard to tell from a pic, but I really doubt a vet visit is necessary. All they're going to do is tell you what you already know; keep it clean and put some ointment on it. Neosporin is fine. We'll generally use that or nitrofurozone. With torn pads, best thing you can do is to put the dog up and not...

You absolutely can carry a break-action shotgun in MH. They also recently started allowing fake guns as well. The rules about what a MH handler can carry do not differentiate between break-action and automatic. If either is called into question, I would expect it to be the auto, as the AKC already d...

We would have a chat about "why" he thinks he needs it. I once had a MH handler come to the line with a Crossman 77 bb gun. I asked him to shake it...the bb's rattled inside. More 'you have to see it' to really judge it. A single whoa isn't going to take a dog out in my eyes. Usually. It depends on how the handler delivers it. If he says a single, not overly loud whoa, at the flush - let's call it a 'precautionary' whoa :) - then it's almost a non-event in my opinion. He...

AKC HT Judge question
You're judging JH. Handler comes to the line asking if he can carry a broke-open shotgun with him when he runs his dog. He has a blank gun; he isn't going to use the shotgun, he just wants to carry it.
Do you let him?
If not, why not?

The question isn't whether he has standing in court, or whether the dog is truly sick. The question is 'What would you do?' One of my favorite judge's gifts was an engraved glass mug. It's one of my main beer drinking glasses at home.
Visa gift cards are better than Basspro, Cabelas, or anything specific. I love those places, but let's face it - give me $25 and I'll spend $150, so it only ends up costing me.
