Squab was part of the final, 11-course meal on the Titanic, considered very high-class. One of my daughters works part-time at a concert hall, where they recently had some kind of Titanic-themed event and served the same 11-course meal. It was a pricey deal, and I had to chuckle that people were pay...

The sign reminds me of a story. A citizen was having a problem with an issue, so he called his state representative. Citizen: "Is Representative Smith in today?" Secretary: "I'm sorry, but Representative Smith passed away this morning." The next day, the citizen calls again. Citizen: "Is Representat...

The Benadryl also helps dogs that get car-sick. The only really strange, accidental injury I saw: A guy's two EPs both chewed through the doors of their dog box, enough to get out. It was the type with thin aluminum that sandwiches an insulating material. Box and dogs' mouths and muzzles were bloodi...

Pup is swimming

Had her first serious swims today. Used my brother's water-crazy dog to entice her. Learned that trick from the NAVHDA guys. After several visits to the water and attempts to coax her a step or two into the deep stuff, today she swam right in. She couldn't resist when the other dog was getting all t...

She does enjoy her Pro Plan. She's gotten lankier in just the past few days, though. The breeder, a veterinarian, said her conformation was great, and she said the photo above reaffirms her opinion. Shows were not part of my discussion with the breeder. But I pretty much had my pick of the litter, I...

Thanks for the comments, guys. I'm really happy with her progression. We're keeping it all fun and games for now, playing a lot in the water and just letting her find birds and figure out how to use her nose, but not letting her catch birds anymore. My niece, who fancies herself an expert dog traine...

That looks like a fine camera too, Coop. Has the critical features I'd be looking for, HD video and image stabilization, plenty of resolution. But if you're going to go compact, and that's roughly what you're looking to spend, I'd look at this one, too: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Canon-10.1-MP-6163B0...

I've seen some pix shot with the G12, which you can probably find in that price range, and they're pretty "bleep" good. The real selling point is the video. The video is remarkable for a camera that fits in your pocket. Get yourself one of those tiny tripods, set it on the ground when your dog goes ...

I took these with a DSLR: a Canon Rebel T2i with a Canon L-series 70-200 lens with image stabilization. If you're going to get serious about taking fast close-ups, you need to think about a DSLR instead of a point-and-shoot. I'll admit, though, that I haven't looked at point-and-shoots in some time,...

NAVHDA training day -- what to expect

I'm joining the area's NAVHDA chapter and will go to my first training day this weekend. Can anyone tell me what to expect? The agenda is steadiness/intro to water. Bosco, they don't fuss with each other during the feeding -- the brit just lets the pup go first. But that definitely sounds like a good idea to feed them separately from now on. Will do. Did some quail introduction today with the 10-week-old spinone pup, just a little playing. She was all happy with the first one, which I held by the feet and allowed to flap around. Don't rush any decisions. Next thing you know, you'll fall in love, get married, have kids to support, you'll want to plan for their future, you'll want a new gun, a new pickup, a new house, etc. And the 9-to-5 might just seem like a reasonable way of putting bread on the table.

Best way to cook bird

I've tried dozens of ways to cook game birds, but I always go back to the basics: Just dredge nugget-sized pieces of breast in Andy's Fish Breading and fry. I like the red variety, not to be confused with the cajun variety. I swear, you could fry a catcher's mitt in this stuff and it would be marvel...
