I don't throw wing clipped birds for pups Throw one for a soft pup and you might end up with a pup learning to leave birds alone. What you allow, you teach!

Been a few of these post's lately from guy's that don't seem to be able to let their pup grow up before they think there's some problem! Your dog is not a dog, it is a pup! Re: Steady to flush- question
First of all, I train with remote launcher's and the dog take's a deep breath and I pop the bird. The dog is taught that it's the dog's movement that flush' the bird. Next and probably more important, your way ahead of where I would want to be. Your dog is a pup for crying out loud! Pup's do thing's...

If I'm breaking a dog out I use a different method. For whoa I use the original Delmar method. I'm pretty sure the flank hitch works but I try not to mess with anything that already works. From the whoa post I go to stakes driven in the ground and dog on the check cord. As I'm CCing the dog around I...

Garmin put in a deal about that when I gt my 320. They said it is normal to be off close in but improve's with range.Close in it sucks, always has but not a problem. Be sure to calibrate it regularly.

Re: Steady? How much, if any, movement is tolerable?
I used to do all manner of nasties while training such as flying a cripple (tethered) bird, walking the bird towards the dog, flushing back towards the dog, having a young pup rip a bird the trainee was standing, verbal release ("Ok...Break!!...Fetch!!...Alright...Let's go..."), etc. And, that was ...

There's quite a bit of difference between a good trial dog and a great bird dog. Great bird dog will probably get you picked up every time! Moving out of cover to mark a bird is allowed in the guidelines but not by judge's. Spending a lot of time searching for a bird the dog didn't mark is fine, ret...

Re: Whats with the hooping and hollaring in field trials??
A huge problem, I think, with horse back field trialing is they are looking for trial dog's. Often times great dog work is shot down as it's considered bad trial work. A dog not gone from sight for most the stake will likely not place. Problem being it didn't run big enough. The dog that run's less ...

Don't use hay as bedding. It will work if it's all you can get but straw is a better choice. Straw is in hollow inside and hay isn't. Straw holds heat better. I've had dog's out in -10 degrees over the years on straw and min size house and they were fine. I think the best house will be a 55 gal drum...
Re: roading
I think people that don't compete with their dog's might condition more than they need to. A hunting dog, hunted even long periods of time learns to pace itself. Competitive dogs are taught to run for specific periods of time. You have a dog you run in one hour braces and want to condition it, train...

If you use a launcher, make the bird in it act like a wild bird. Otherwise a check cord and birds sat on the ground with their head tucked will train your dog if you do your part. Of course the same goes for the remote launcher, you have to do your art or it won't work that well. Bird's in the remot...

I don't believe that having human scent on a bird your training with matter's one bit. It's the bird the dog want's and it's scent is also there and probably stronger. For a dog handling birds right, 200 to 300 yds is not really a bad thing. At my age I'm where I like a dog in that close. Problem being getting to the dog.
