Re: Training FT versus Hunting
Guys - I am a pointer guy, so bear with me on this one. I am a bit perplexed. I do not understand why one would want to test a retrieving dog for field work. Retrievers are supposed to retrieve. At least that is what I thought the breed was designed for. pointers point, spaniels flush and retriever...

Re: GSP Titles (on pedigree)
In the AKC, the hunt test is actually considered an acknowledgement, not a title because it is pass/fail, not competitive. Greg, That's not true. Hunt test titles are "titles" just like field trial titles are. Because they are earned via non-competitive events they are suffix titles; titles printed...

Re: Training FT versus Hunting
No, not having an upland dog retrieve in an upland trial is the equivalent of not having a retriever in a retriever trial find and flush the bird before it is shot for the mark and retrieve. Kind of ridiculous to be testing those retrievers on only half the job isn't it? Must be because retriever t...

Stedy to shot or steady to flush ? Which is better in your opinion ? Break them all the way to wing and shot, keep them that way for a year and then decide what you want to do. Where exactly does everyone draw the line between "in-breeding " and "line-breeding" ?? Ask 10 dog breeders that question and you'll get at least 11 answers. Talk to a geneticist and you will find that line-breeding is not a term they use. To them, it's all inbreeding; it's just a matter of degree....

20 vs 28 weight depends if they were built on the same frame or not. The 28 can be built on a small frame and be proportionally lighter than the 20. True, except no one makes a 28 gauge gun on a 28 gauge frame in the sub $1500 market, much less the $500 market the original poster mentions. FWIW, Dave

It's too cold, without any doubt. When the retriever pros come back north in the spring, they usually wait until the water is at least 50* before putting adult dogs in it. Even then, they wait until it's warmer before putting pups in. As a matter of perspective, my GSP pro who is in TX right now won...

Perfectly allowed and common. The only time it can get tricky is if two non-AKC registered DKs are bred in the US, and then someone tries to register the offspring with the AKC.
