Re: Outside kennels, what would you do different
My back yard is on a fairly steep slope, so I put a drain in the middle of my 10 x 10 pad and ran 2" pvc about fifty yards farther down the hill. I'm able to rinse out the kennels each day and they stay smelling much better, which is important since they are near my deck. It was a lot of work diggin...

Can't go wrong with Bob Konz at Hackberry. Typically offers Elhew and Blackawk lines. Very knowledgeable guy. Spotless kennels. Lots of satisfied customers. I picked up a pup from him last fall and am very happy with it thus far.

Followed Shag's advice and checked out abebooks. Picked up the Hochwalt's "Modern Pointer" and another Horace Lytle book, "Breaking A Bird Dog". Both are interesting. Ruark's "Old Man and The Boy" and "The Old Man's Boy Grows Older" both contain some stories about his experiences hunting quail behind his setters and pointers, as well as tales about fishing, waterfowling, and big game hunting. He's probably my favorite writer as well. I've given copies of that boo...

Lytle was a very good writer - "How To...' is very entertaining and you'll pick up an old school training tip or two as well. His book about his Irish Setter "Smada Bird" is titled "Gun Dogs Afield" and another great read. I found a copy a year or so ago. The book was written in 1942, and inside the...

AG; Check the number of pointers entered in NAVHDA tests over the past number of years, then calculate the percentage of those dogs passing the tests. You'll find that pointers, while entered far less frequently, typically score pretty close to what the established "versatile" breeds do. That's what...

I got started in pointers fifteen years ago, after having some versatiles that I enjoyed, and I haven't looked back. My biggest surprise has been the retrieving, including in water - all four of those I've had thus far have been pretty solid in that regard, good enough for a VC and two other UT's. I...

I understand that NSTRA requires steady to flush, but figured that went without saying. The steadiness required for a UT or VC NAVHDA dog is far more advanced. Same with retrieving. I think I went to four NSTRA trials and can't remember seeing any dogs steady through wing/shot/fall. It's actually so...

A few years back I got a young pointer through the NAVHDA Invitational, and the next spring ran him in a NSTRA trial that was the first one he or I had ever entered. I wouldn't panic at this point given your dog's young age. I hunt with AA-bred pointers that range out to 500 yards on the prairie when we're after sharptails. The same dogs hunt pheasants in heavy cattails and stay within 40-50 yards. Takes a season or two for them to figure it out, but they will. ...

My experience is that a good dog can adapt it's range to the game and conditions.
