There was one thing different about this falls trail,over other trials held by us in the past,we had the vast majority of dogs ran by non pro's at the trial.
It was nice to see such a large turn out without the pro's help,it shows that am trialers can fill up our 4 lakes trials.

I would not bother with pigeons,as you have the real deal wild quail,I would just get him into them as much as possible.
He will never catch them,and then one day he will just plain point them.
There is no better way to teach a dog to point than let the wild birds do it

only one problem with af derby stakes,how many dogs running are really derby aged?
I ran an af derby stake attached to an af wild bird championship,after my run the judge asked me if I knew I was running against dogs that were 2 years older than mine was,and she was 16 months old.

I would just continue to let the dog find birds,and I would put them down lightly so the bird will be up and moving around.
When the dog walks off a smelled bird I would not make a big deal about it,just move on and come back to it later,it sounds like the dog just needs to build confidence,is all.
