Re: How many gun dogs?
Disclaimer - we compete with our dogs rather than bird hunt. But the dog population question has similarities between the two. I think first you have to consider your housing situation. If you live somewhere with restrictions on the number of dogs you can keep, it's a whole other game than if you c...

Re: How many gun dogs?
I raise my dogs from puppies from the best genetics I can find. I love the process of working with talented puppies and bringing them along as well as the bond we form. I have really enjoyed reading your updates and watching some of your videos. You have done a great job with your dogs. A lot of ti...

I raise my dogs from puppies from the best genetics I can find. I love the process of working with talented puppies and bringing them along as well as the bond we form. But I have a good Friend who seems to find really nice adult dogs on a recurring basis. I have hunted with one of his GSPs on wild...

Re: How many gun dogs?
I am now retired and have significantly more time to hunt and work with my dogs than I did in the past. Elk and whitetail hunting in multiple states has been my primary focus the last 25 years but getting tags is getting harder and carrying out elk quarters on my back isn't getting any easier. The w...

How many gun dogs?
I am going through the process of reserving a couple of new pups next year. I lost one of my Vizsla's in May and initially was going to replace with a single pup but I have decided to get two pups(with time in between) so that I have the option to switch out on a hot day or rest one when needed. I a...

Re: Wireless Remote Thermometer
I put an AccRite thermometer I got off Amazon in the back to monitor temps and humidity. I think they are pretty much all the same. I have a fan that runs off 12v for air movement that I can run when driving and I also have a portable Ryobi fan that runs off batteries, for when I am stopped.

Here is a link to the VACCS Trials that Shags mentioned. The program is being run by three vet programs nationally, with specific requirements for participation.

Re: Insurance
It's important to have clear communication with your veterinary professionals about treatments, costs, and probable outcomes. For example, recently my daughter's little dog was diagnosed with lymphoma. She was referred ro a veterinary oncologist who explained the treatment in detail. Bottom line, n...

Re: Insurance
I recently lost one of my Vizsla's to cancer. She went down hill quickly. We took her to the University clinic to confirm what the local vet thought. Surgery, intensive care and chemo were going to cost over $10,000. They didn't think she would make it through surgery and her cancer was aggressive a...

Re: Insurance
My nephew recently got a pup and talked to his vet. His vet recommended putting money away every month into a "dog account". Instead of paying premiums put the money into the account and use it as needed. I thought it was pretty good advice. With most young dogs, by the time you need it, you have a ...

Lucky dogs! Unfortunately, the water where I live has too many water moccasin's for my liking so we don't spend much time in or around the water down here.

Website is still down and they don't return calls from their main number. Not a good sign. Never stayed there but I am looking for a place. Every summer I travel West to a Snake Breaking Clinic which uses live Rattlesnakes. It is a 2 day trip where I get to run my dogs on wild birds the evening I arrive and the morning the next day when we do the clinic. I am going to one in SD the first Weekend in August. I have seen clinics currently...

Re: Acana dog food
I agree with everything Garrison said. There are a lot of good brands and feeding PPP is always a safe bet. Too many great hunting dogs using it to question it. I wouldn't put a lot of weight on an opinion from a pet store employee when it comes to feeding a hunting dog although they would probably ...

I got a new truck with a cap and one of the things I am doing is adding a couple thermometers to the inside of my truck bed so I can monitor the temperature inside the cap when I have dogs back there. One of my Vizsla's was a finicky eater so I might add an egg to her dinner when we are hunting to make sure she got food in her. I like to have hard boiled eggs in my cooler for lunch or breaks but will share if I didn't give them food that morning before hunting. Probably don't have too but no reas...

Re: Fat supplement
I give my dogs cooked or hard boiled eggs during the season. Good source of fat and protein. Cottage cheese is another easy supplement. I have read sardines are also a good source of fat/protein but I have never given them to my dogs. I actually like sardines but the ones I buy have jalapeños in the...

I have my two Vizsla pups on Black Gold Ultimate Puppy. I occasionally mix in some Innova puppy wet. As they get older will switch to the BG black bag and one of their high protein bags depending on time of year. They seem to do well on Black Gold and I can get it at a feed store for a fair price.

If the condition doesn't get better you might try switching your dog food to a non allergenic that your vet can prescribe. I had a couple of retrievers with severe food allergies. They developed hot spots and lost hair like your dog. Shots and Benedryl only provided temporary relief. Getting them to...

My 12 year old lab has these same symptoms. Weakness in the rear. Stiff legged in the front. Couldn't walk or stand to eat or pee. Our vet called it a Tick Paralysis. I don't know if they are the same thing or not but my wife is calling the vet tomorrow to discuss. We are trying to get her off stero...
