Re: Difference in training a retriever and pointing breed
Retriever training is all about complete control of your dog while hunting. Pointer training is all about creating an independent dog while hunting. Best joke of the day -- Thanks for the laugh  ... Don't know why this is so funny - actually it's pretty accurate based on my experience. I...

Those are great pics of your dogs, Don. Really nice. The quality of most of the pics people are posting is amazing! Re: Dog crapping while hunting?
All of our five dogs do it. I call it "the huntn' skinnies." I suspect it's from whatever food hasn't been processed from the night before and how much we overfed them at that time.
Range of pointer for grouse
You probably shouldn't own a pointer if you want it to hunt at 30 yards, that's flusher range. You have to learn to let the dog roll and trust it. If he's staying within 100 yards, he's in perfect grouse range. Is this for real - 100 yards for grouse? Are you talking ruffed grouse? Here in northwes...
Re: Grouse
I'm jealous! Great picture, too. We've been hunting ruffed quite a bit this year and I'm too embarrassed to say how many we actually shot!

Don, I like the name! Don't worry about Stormy getting darker - he will. Both Breelie and Robert are dark red. Robert was also "light red" as a young pup. Their head seems to get dark first, then their "grown up" coat comes in darker. Can't wait to see him this spring. If he's anything like his pare...

We never put a puppy in the water when it's cold. Meaning, unless you are near water and the pup just runs in on its own, we don't toss a bumper or bird to encourage swimming when its cold. We don't train the big dogs in cold water either. Hunting ducks is different. Dogs that are already accustomed...

Re: Dog got cut up by a cat, any reason to worry?
My advice: Clean the cuts thoroughly - you can use saline solution to get the "high powered" flushing action. Then apply EMT ointment/spray. I use EMT for most minor wounds. Flush everyday and re-apply EMT (or antibiotic ointment). Cat bites are bad news if not cleaned, etc. Keep a close eye on the ...

Folks, all animals, including humans, perceive and react differently to electricty. It is not a pain threshold issue, some are very sensitive to the stimulations, both in terms of the level and duration. Testing an e-collar on the calloused fingers of a human tells you nothing about what the dog wi...

I love having the e-collar as a training tool. Twenty-five years ago, when I started training my first hunting dog, I was against the use of e-collars. I had heard a couple horror stories and that's all it took. First impressions are significant. But, when I took my first "trained" lab pheasant hunt...

Here's some ideas. I agree that some dogs need more water than others - my five are a perfect example. But, I still like to (at least) encourage my dogs to drink a little more when we are going hunting, or training on warm or hot days. I put a small amount of milk or some chicken fat in their water....

A natural reaction for many people when a dog comes at them is to back away with the hands in front of them. As a general rule, you should only use the e-collar when the dog is away from you so that he doesn't associate you with the e-collar. The jumping is a dominance test, as you already mentioned. I respectfully disagree with these two comments. Dogs not only "should" know where the correction is comin...
