Re: What do your dogs have on when grouse hunting?
Alpha 100 w/ nameplate on her flank, just her 2nd season. Bell around her neck. I got so I literally despised the beepers and I think the beeper is the way to ruin the dogs hearing. If we pay attention to the bell, it can tell us exactly what the dog is doing.

Cylinder-skeet or improved cylinder for the beginning of season, tighten up after the leaves fall, improved cylinder, mod or even full as the birds become extremely hard to get close to-----AND THEN,,, you will have them flush right in your face and you will wonder why you tightened up on the chokes

I also bought one this past year, the Instinct SL, around 300 rounds thru it. One of the lightest guns made! Absolutely no metal to metal contact---smooth as silk, you will never find one on the shelf like this! $1100, you pay shipping. I bought this mostly for sporting clays and it is just to light!

Well, my little Ally, 21 month old GWP, also found her second porkie in 3 days. The first, she only had one quill but this time she had a mouth full. Re: Woodcock!
Speaking of flushes - how far does a woodcock generally flush? Is it worth going after like a flushed grouse? Quite often you can see them land after flying only 20-30 yards. Othertimes they may go high and go fly of sight, but most often will not fly as far as a flushed grouse. Yes, it is worth go...

They usually go vertical 12-15 feet, then start to fly away horizontally. Let them get out from you so your spread opens up, this is the hard part, we usually shoot to fast.

The Woodcock are coming in, we had two limits, 6 birds yesterday. Probably 40 - 50 points, I have two different 2-3 hour circles where I pointed/put up perhaps 25 grouse earlier in the season. A few circles where we put up 10 -15 and all to many where I see/hear NOTHING!! Very spotty here in N Wis.

Kent used to make an inexpensive steel upland load, 1 oz # 7, 12 ga, the added bb's in steel compared to the same weight of lead make up for any differences at the early season closer ranges we shoot the thunder chickens at!! Just make sure you pattern the loads and use open chokes.
