For hunting I like the more visible plastic coated nylon in orange for white dogs and the bright yellow for darker dogs. The regular nylon seems to color fade quicker and are harder to clean if your dog happens to roll in cow manure or dead animal carcass (for some reason it happens every now and th...

Thanks everyone for the input. I will outline a typical training session to see if there is a clue to my problems. I don't train with a group as often as I should and it definately is a handicap. Normally, I train by myself during the week near my home and on occassion I have a helper. The other pro...

Steady to Wing and Shot
Help!!!!……I’m having steadiness problems with my 2.5 female GSP. After bird season last year I started working with her on steady to wing/shot/fall and entered her in a couple of AKC Hunt Tests. Got one Senior Hunter placement but she still had a tendency to break before the shot. In April I went ba...

NAVHDA UT and NA Test
Well things didn’t turn out like I had planned, but the OK_NAVHDA Test this past weekend wasn’t a total collapse. My 5-month-old pup earned a NA Prize II and really made a strong showing considering she played second fiddle to the older dog’s preparation. The two year old was a different story thoug...

I posted this question on another forum and the recommendations were 3 to 1 for plain "Hog Chow" with nothing else, not even grit. The chow is available at most feed stores and considrable cheaper than the pigeon food I was buying. Looks like that is probably the way I will go. Thanks for everyones ...

Pigeon Feed
I used up my last bag of mixed grain pigeon feed and need to restock. With the mixed grains there seems to be selective feeding that causes considerable waste. I have used Purina Pigeon Checkers (pellets) in the past but have trouble finding them. Is there another brand of pellet or meal I can subst...

I need to replace my galvanized metal dog houses. I can salvage the top and door awning and am considering building the rest. I read somewhere about using "Hardie Board" for the exterior. Other than needing to seal the outside, does anyone have experience pro/con on using "Hardie Board"? Thanks... C...

Greg, I think there is already something in the works for a AKC MH Excellent. Last year at a Kansas Hunt Test I spent the evening talking with an AKC Field Rep. about that very subject. He detailed some of the requirements but I have slept since then. I do know it will require multiple levels of wat...

Ryan, I'm not unhappy with the video, it is an excellent series. I did talk with Jon about the repeat scene and he said they thought the theme was so important they wanted to make sure it wasn't overlooked. Several friends and I have been using the "Perfect Start" method with their young ones and th...

Leather Work
I have used regular pop-rivets. Push through from the underside of the collar and add a washer over the top of the nameplate if the rivet is smaller than the hole in the name tag. Use the pop rivet tool to set the rivet. Not to hard to remove if you want to save the tag. Also, use aluminum so they w...

I know it's late but I just got through watching Disc #2 of the Perfect Finish. I am not sure if it is me or not but it looks like there are several scenes repeated in the middle where he is working with a dog named "Angus". Roading Options
A co-worker uses a modified treadmill to exercise his pitbulls. If I am not mistaken he purchased it already setup for roading dogs. The belt free wheels so there is no motor to control and the platform inclines to increase difficulty. He places a temptation (treat) in front of the dog to get the mo...

Greg, I have used that method a lot. I normally use the small mesh bird bags, walk along and toss one in the cover. When the dog comes in and points toss one from my carry bag. Works pretty good. A lot less foot scent left for the dog to pickup on. If I don't come in from upwind side to plant birds ...

Johnny House Options
Besides the Johnny House, is there an effective way to recover quail for re-use. I use homing pigeons mostly but would like to use quail to prepare for the upcoming Hunt Tests. I don't have a place to put a Johnny House and I understand this time of the year the Johnny House doesn't work very well. ...

DIY Backing Dog
The Innotek Backing Dog uses a 12volt DC gear motor to raise/lower the silhouette. By using the gear motor there is no need for stored energy type mechanisms (i.e., springs) for power. I made a backing dog using a spring loaded door hinge. Got it to raise but had to manually reset. Sometimes I think...

AKC Hunt Test Question
Got a Hunt Test question. Dog points, steady to wing, shot, fall and sent to retrieve. On way to retrieve, another bird flushes wild. What should the dog do? Continue on sent retrieve or stop to flush. If dog stops to flush, are you allowed to walk to dog and release it again to retrieve first bird?...

Problems With Honoring
Thanks everyone. Here is my game plan and feel free to change it if necessary. I have pigeons, remote launcher, and e-collar ready to go. First, it's back to work on the whoa and stop to flush in the yard. Then move to my training field and go over the same routine. Once I am satisfied with the basi...

Problems With Honoring
I need help with my 19 mo. old female GSP. This is her second season of hunting and she has really turned it on with her bird finding and retrieving. My problem is with her honoring (backing). Early on she showed signs of natural honoring (backing). I would caution (whoa) her if she wanted to move. ...
